I would, there are parts that are 1:49ish - going from Alton to Medstead - right on the cusp of the climb, and given it doesn't get much if any sun, can make life interesting!

The best example being when the N2 visited - wasn't rostered to do that section on its own, but things transpired otherwise........ it had 5 on the hook solo............. I was at the first drop light, the noise was something else, and it made it - just - on wet & greasy rail - the look on peoples faces as we rolled into Medstead solo was priceless, as they were expecting the U Boat as pilot & had obviously heard the approach. :)

The N2 should do 5 with no problem. it was doing 5 as a routine on the NYMR and I think it did 6 on a couple of occasions. And if we are counting short distances, the NYMR has a strecth at 1 in 41 and a 15 chain length at 1 in 42/3 on a 13 chain curve to contend with.

It did - just - some superb enginenmanship from the owner - he fired it! :) And I'm guessing that (from distant memory) most of your steep bumps are in the open............... (its been over 30 years since I was last there)

But given the time of year, railhead conditions, and in the middle of a gala, and the fact it should have had a pilot.................

Never mind N2's would take silly length ECS up Holloway bank back in the day.

Yes but didnt Eastern Region think a 72xx tank would be ideal for their ECS moves out of The Cross?

doesn't sound likely....a 2-8-0T would make more sense given the short runs

I read it somwhere just cant remember where! Cant remember if it was a 72xx tank or a 42xx tank either way I know it was a big tank though I think the width across the cylinders may have scuppered it though. I'll try and do some digging today and see what I come up with.

I remember that too, think it may have been in one of Mr Hardys essays, I don't think it was as specific as a 42xx or 72xx; he just said a GWR 8 coupled tank.

And in Mid Hants related news... ;)
Cheltenham & Nellie were in steam yesterday.
Nellie put in another sterling performace on the fully loaded load 6 runs yesterday evening.

I've not seen this mentioned in the thread yet...

On the 2nd October it will be 150 years since the Alton, Alresford and Winchester Railway Company opened the Mid Hants Railway between Alton & Winchester, building stations at Ropley, Alresford & Itchen Abbas.

Saturday was a Class 37 running day in addition to the normal 2 Steam services.
It was good to see a reasonable turnout of Diesel fans. I'd estimate that 1/2 to 3/4 of the front coach were there for the 37 which was in fine form. :)

Nellie and Cheltenham were the to other locos in steam, here returning to Ropley for service prior to the Belle & and the RAT.

Maybe there will be some updates at the MHRPS Open weekend (is it the AGM this weekend?).

    Talking of the weekend..................

Don't forget the wagon group will have our sales stand on the platform at M4M, and we will also be conducting yard tours, where you'll be able to see up close & personal, the improvements to the QMB, the progress on the BY Van (C), and the overhaul of a BR Brake Van (the number escapes me!), and whatever else is in the yard. :)

Though we don't charge for yard tours, donations are always most welcome, to help us maintain the Country's 'premier'(?) freight rake! ;)

    Behave!

We're not like you Can Pac lads, where work gets in the way of tea drinking! ;)

Any road, the QMB seems to be the preserve of the midweek guys, whereas the Saturday lot have the BY & BR Brake to contend with, oh, and we all use the kettle in the mess room. :)

    ???????

Its a QMB ! :Banghead:

Sadly it won't be "Pride of the Fleet" until next year, as things have been discovered that mean it requires more attention than originally thought. :(

So, now you have the chance to see it this weekend. ;)

Regarding the weekend, I believe Nelly is booked to haul the freight for the final time on Saturday & Wadebridge doing the honours on Sunday.............. as for the consist, the cattle van is due to make its debut in the rake............
