I've only had time to process this one at the moment. I've 5296.jpg also emailed the railway to point out that the website was showing the wrong name for 35006. this has now been corrected.

34081 visited the Bluebell four times. 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2007. Double headed with 21C123 in both 2000 and 2001.

    Hi,
AFAIK the light Pacifics which carried the same variation as 34081 are as follows :
    34071 4/48 to 2/52
    34072 4/48 to 4/52
    34073 5/48 to 12/50
    34074 5/48 to 6/50
    34075 6/48 to 9/52
    34076 6/48 to 9/50
    34077 7/48 to 8/51
    34078 7/48 to 8/51
    34079 7/48 to 5/51
    34080 8/48 to 8/51
    34081 9/48 to 4/50
    34082 9/48 to 9/50
    34083 10/48 to 9/52
    34084 11/48 to 3/50
    34085 11/48 to 3/50
    34089 12/48 to 6/52
    35021 9/48 to 11/50
    35022 10/48 to 5/50
    35023 11/48 to 3/54
    35024 11/48 to 3/49
    35025 11/48 to 9/49
    35026 12/48 to 7/49
    35027 12/48 to 4/50
    35028 12/48 to 1/51

34090 carried a unique malachite livery.
35029 and 35030 were outshopped in malachite but may have had plain cream lettering rather than SR style sunshine.

Probably one of those questions where you need good photos or records, but in addition to those listed by @Spamcan81, there's a photo here of 34020 running in Malachite, "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the tender, "34020" painted on the front framing (rather than a smokebox number plate) and carrying nameplates and crests - thus far exactly like 34081 currently carries, but with the addition of the circular "Southern" logo on the smokebox door:

On the same page, there is a picture of "Fighter Command" in similar condition, but numbered (on the front framing and cab side) s21C149 rather than 34049.

No sadly I haven't been behind or seen 34070 as I haven't been to Swanage for a long time and and she wasn't in steam then (I might have seen 34072 but don't recall seeing it).

Thank you for such a comprehensive answer. I wonder why so few photos were taken of these engines in this condition compared with "before" (21C1xx numbering and circle on the smokebox) or "after" (341xx numbering and smokebox number plate) or perhaps I just haven't bought the right books?

I remember seeing 34081 at the Bluebell when my Uncle and Dad took me one day in 98 (I forget exactly when 34081 visited the Bluebell that year) and then I saw her in I think that October at Wansford on a stopover on our way to Pickering on holiday with my parents and grandparents. Then saw 34081 in the yard at Sheffield Pak in 2001 with my other grandparents and rode behind her in 2007 at the Giants that year prior to this weekend. I really love the BR Malachite on her.

Here's three more from me. I have to say that 92 Squadron absolutely looks the business, and it sounds pretty good too. RN5304.jpg RN5307.jpg RN5310.jpg

34081 took part in a Mad Hants photo charter today, and while it's got not a lot to do with the gala itself, I thought I'd share my efforts here. Big thanks to @Hampshire Unit, @Duty Druid and @Spamcan81 and all at the MHR/BBLS for their efforts today.

Spent a wonderful day on the line on Sunday with my son. Following the great gala put on at Swanage earlier in the year, the MHR had to go some to compete with that and did they ever! Although my son claims that 92 Squadron was the star, sorry @Spamcan81 but for me it had to be 80078. She looked amazing and sitting behind the smokebox going up Medstead bank was a sound to behold. The timetable slipped regularly but the resilience in it made sure that it could be recovered so well done to those who drew it up. Managed to get several shots of which I have posted a few here and got a video of 34053 storming away from Ropley with the freight which, although loaded to Facebook ok, (can be seen in the "Steam-West Country, Battle of Britain and Merchant Navy" and "Watercress Line Mid-Hants Railway" groups) the PC wants to rotate. Anyone got any ideas how I can rotate it back as I'm getting a crooked neck trying to watch it!

Anyway, once again, well done to all those involved with planning and executing this weekend and good luck for next weekend. Sorry I can't make it again but work calls.

Thanks for this. I don't have a list of which Bulleids built pre 1948 had their Southern lettering replaced by British Railways lettering. Many just had the Southern anted out and the tenders remained blank until BR dark green was applied. IIRC at least one received a malachite repaint but with the BR number applied in cream and the cycling lion applied to the tender.

Not strictly part of the SR50 event but on Monday BBLS and the MHR wagon group took the opportunity of running 34081 on a goods as a fund raiser for both groups.

She visited for Giants in 1998 and stayed on for a short while after and returned in the first week of November. Glad you like her livery.

Oh right I know I saw her twice in 98 at the NVR and Bluebell and think that's why I like the malachite as it's what I normally associate 34081 with.

Not exactly related to the Gala, but here's visitor 34081 '92 Squadron' taking part in a photo charter, organised by the BBLS and the MHR Wagon Group. A superb charter, well worth the 5am Alarm!

    Enjoy!
