Were 2 20s really needed to back up Dave - could 1 not have done the job? How many coaches are in the illuminations set?

Yes, not needed as such but they have done thunderbird duties in multiple as stated above, so no point in separating them.

41312 boiler at lunchtime. Still some more stays to fit LHS, then knock over the ends.

Yesterday, dear reader, we had planned to resume hostilities with the troublesome trucks, but the weather put the kibosh on that as it would've just been to cold to work either inside or out!

So, instead I found myself standing in the dark in the rain next to @Hampshire Unit photting steam in the dark....... thankfully we had shelter in between trains in a PWay hut!

It also meant that before meeting up, I had the chance to nip into Ropley and see what was what, where I bumped into @Stinch, who had 'Dave' as his charge for the evening - was good to see you again mate, and for once have a chat!!! :) Oh & Thanks for giving it the beans at Arleside, unexpected, but much appreciated!!! :D

After that, I had to leave as the snow was coming down hard and fast & I found myself driving through a blizzard on an untreated main road.......... otherwise I may have stayed and got 34072 in the platform as well.......

So, my efforts from last night......

Hmmm......... sometimes, I really do question my sanity....... having capped a working party atop the hill due to weather conditions, ie to cold to do owt, Muggin's 'Ere & me Mucker somehow found ourselve's sat in the mess room enjoying a breakfast.........

It probably had something to do with text messages on Friday evening, where the words wagon's & p h o t o c h a r t e r entered into things, and the need to check over the troublesome trucks before they escaape Bennett's and go out to play.........

So, once breakfast was consumed, and we'd caught up with things, it was time to venture out from the warmth of the mess room and venture out into a cold & frozen landscape...... both us probably wishing we were at home under a nice warm duvet, just like the rest of the lads in the Saturday gang were doing, but also happy to be back up the yard doing something!! :)

Once we'd gathered all the stuff we needed, it was down to Benett's siding where the troublesome trucks currently reside and to see what the ravages of the weather had done to them since they last ran in the gala back in October........ two out of three were given pad exams (the 3rd has roller bearings) and the wells examined for water ingress..... happily all boxes contained only oil, which were topped up and the pads also given a dose.

After that, it was a case of oiling all round each one........ as it turned out, there two pay & plays out, one with 257 squadron & the other with D8059......which were a nice surprise, as the only things we usually see moving at this time of year are the Wickham Trolleys!!

By the end of play, everything that could move on the wagon's had been given copious amounts of oil, so hopefully when they go out to play, they won't disgrace themselves.........:Nailbiting:

Single 20 with Dave BY + 5 wouldn’t keep time of Dave were to stop providing power for some reason. One 20 on that set alone is wide open power handle from Butts to the summit and you’re probably tight on time too.

And so, dear reader, the first full on working party of 2025 took place atop the hill yesterday. :) With five in attendance, and after a much missed breakfast from the bakers, and a good catch up, it was time to head down the yard and to see what was what........ along with remembering just where we'd got to at the end of last year!

That done, me Oppo & a couple of the lads opted to refitting the brake rigging to the steel highfit........ just as well that they like jigsaw puzzles, as finding out just where various bits were meant to go needed referrencing against photos of when it was all in situ before being taken apart........ that kept them busy for the day, and by the end, most, but not all had been refitted.
Of note, whilst the cross hangers were off site, they were repaired with MIG welding, something we don't currently have access to, but we found a friendly MIG welder who offered to do it for nowt! :):) And once done me Oppo cleaned them up and fashioned new collars for the ends to eliminate the play in the brake blocks.

That left Muggin's 'Ere & me Mucker to pick up the baton on the LMS van.......

Somehow, we found ourselves progressing the roof hoops that we'd fashioned last year....... first job was to offer them up to the van...... the first two that we offered up to the outside, matched the profile of the roof , but that was only after we'd had a major brain fart in putting together the scaffold tower......... we put that down to a long week at work and the January blues.......

Next up was to offer up the remaining two hoops to the inside....... they're shorter than to two external ones, but it turns out, they're a perfect fit! :Jawdrop:

When we started to produce the hoops using the final steel hoop as a template, we deliberately left them longer than the steel hoop, as we weren't sure just how they'd fit, and whether or not we'd either have to trim them or add a filet...... so more by luck than judgement, it turns out we'd actually produced hoops of the right lengths, given that two of them are shorter! :Saywhat:

After that, it is now a case of making them look like roof hoops, so we've now started the slow process of fettling them into shape, that took us the rest of the day, as the top sections that were fashioned & glued & screwed into place aren't yet as good as they should be, but being resourceful folks, we're getting there - slowly! :)

It'll be awhile yet before they're good enough to be offered up and drilled and bolted on, as they will need primming and bringing up to first gloss first.

Brake rigging going on on the steel highfit.

Milestone reached today with the donation fund hitting £10k for 1125 bodywork repair fund.

    Most recent update below >>>>>

Firstly apologies for the lack of recent updates. Christmas train services have distracted many people, and the weather hasn't been conducive for working parties either.

A great deal is taking place behind the scenes in terms of putting together a project plan, and discussing how and where we can move the project on.

The fundraising is progressing well and we are immensely grateful to everyone that has supported us so far.

Back in November we purchased a window repair panel from our friends at South Devon Railway Engineering. This followed a considerable amount of research into the design. To show a bit of perspective we took the opportunity the show how the repair panels fit into the plan, and where they actually go.

The panels are larger than required, so that they can be trimmed accordingly, and the photos below illustrate the extent of the area they cover. Panels are reversable and therefore two panels are required to produce a complete window.

Repair panels cost £103.20 each, and we will be looking to purchase more very shortly. How can you help?

If you would like to sponsor a panel, or indeed a pair of panels, we will engrave your name on the inside of the panel for posterity, and will advise you where your panels have been fitted into the unit.
Once we commence the bodywork repairs, the more panels that we have in stock, will determine the speed at which we can repair the unit.

If you wish to sponsor a panel, please ensure that you add a note to the JustGiving page along with any details of names etc.

Lions link here if you’re also feeling generous

For once on a Saturday, Muggin's 'Ere wasn't trying to tame the troublesome trucks atop the hill, instead I left that to the lads who turned up, though a visit was paid to Medstead in the morning....... :Shifty:

For a change, Muggin's 'Ere & @Hampshire Unit spent a very long, tiring, but enjoyable day :Saywhat: herding cats......... on a photo charter with 34072....... :) Even if the weather didn't live up to expectations, with ever changing forecasts........ at least it didn't rain!

34072 is a seriously lovely bit of kit, it performed faultlessly through out the day and never once lost its feet, even when restarting on the banks :) and the breakfast bap from the shovel at silly o clock in the morning was bob on!! :D

A massive thanks goes out to the crews, who on the day made the gallery very happy, as they were also out to enjoy themselves, so thanks guys, you played a blinder making our job a lot easier, and it was good to have a catch up. :)

Thanks also go to those who spent time putting the rakes together prior to the day, and also the SLL & Swanage for letting us have a day playing with 34072 - can we keep it please?....... the crews love it!

Oh, and we also had the Watercress Film Unit along for company, so you just might see some footage from the charter in the near future.........:)

So, in advance of that, here's some pics from yesterday.........

After last Saturday's 'fun' time herding cats, it were back to reality with a bump yesterday atop the hill........ it were a dank day, cold, windy and a low lying fog from Lymington Bottom down through the Soke.........

Still, after picking up breakfast for all, along with bits for Me Sen at the Bakers, it were time to wander down the yard and crack on with taming some troublesome trucks, albeit slowly, given the conditions!

Three of the lads continued with hanging the brake rigging on the steel Highfit, which left Muggin's 'Ere, Me Oppo & Me Mucker to progress things with LMS van M517317.......

Roof hoops were on the to do list....... so first job was to show the last steel hoop into position, clamp it up & set the acrow prop under it befor drilling through bolt holes....... the bolts were easy enough to lay our hands on, the nuts & washers were another story, but we found them eventually!!!

Next up was to buzz off the excess on all the bolts, and screw in the appropriate screws to the upper holes on the steel roof hoops where we can't get the drill into, after that Me Mucker went off to apply a second coat of primer to the four new roof hoops in a nice and warm CCT, having got the heaters going to warm the hoops through as well as the paint - lucky Bugga!!!

That left Muggin's & Me Oppo to fashion lengths of Arris rail to close the gaps between floor and cladding, as well as acting as bump stops, so that meant finally having a good clear out of the van!

The Arris rail will need treating with dollop, but thats a job for when the weather turns and things warm up............

We also took the oppertunity to do a bit of forward planning with the LMS van, and have a good look at the troublesome trucks in Bennett's, now that they've return to base.

It was nice to see 506 out to play at the head of a private hire, with a train full of happy family's!!

    Good morning.

Is there anyone here connected with the Mid-Hants who can give any info about the trains running on/from Saturday this week please.

Which locos are goping to be rostered on the two train service on Saturday this week, and if the special event will mean the locos will have any 'adornments' on them please?

I'l probably only photo from the lineside and stations and not travel much, if at all, but as a minimum I always buy a day or event ticket, whichever covers the day I visit.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Bryan
