    Keep up at the back!
When discussing proper engines, clarity is enhanced by not using those strange BR numbers ...

Now this can open up a whole can of worms. Does that mean that 73082, 75027, etc are not proper locomotives?

As I get older and less fit, the strengths of 80151 are slowly winning me round …

Within the ranks of 'Standard' locomotives are some really useful designs. The 1950s turned out some great machines and let's face it, in 2025 that is quite a while ago now!

If members on here had a choice of a LMS class five or a Standard class 5 which one would they prefer to drive or fire.

    thanks

Since it’s been a fair few years now. Here’s a photo of 73096 going back to 2010 at Stable lane.

Peter Smith who has taken both over the S&D says Standard 5

    Which makes sense

Std 5. Better layout, bigger wheels, otherwise just as free steaming etc. also has roller bearings so easier to prep.

I believe the frames did go in Ropley works for a short amount of time before CanPac took priority. In some recent pictures I think the frames of 92212 can be seen inside the works again so not sure where it stands currently.

I must admit, i found the std 5 an easier engine the cab layout was better, the std 4 tanks are probally the most suitable engines for preserved line use,

In the same time frame as every other overhaul / repair: Ready when it's ready. :)
Seriously though, there is a lot of work to do yet.

Even when I was fit a Standard would always be a preferred choice. I like to think I’m not daft. :)

It appears she was sold to an individual last year and remains at Ropley.

I’ve 7 Black 5’s under my belt but never had a BR Cl.5. Even so, based on my experience with other Standards (9 in total) I’d go for a Standard 5 any day.

An interesting development. Will she remain at the Watercress Line?

I found my short time on the footplate 73096 was the easier loco to fire compared to the other locos that were in service at the time.
