The contention that the identity of a loco belongs to the frames, and therefore "new frames = new loco" is a pure myth; it has no basis in historical reality. Cases in which locos had complete frame replacements without suddenly becoming new locos; or in which locos received complete sets of frames from another loco but kept the original identity (not that of the donor loco) are legion. So by any historical standard, 4561 is having a very heavy overhaul but what emerges will still be 4561, not a new build.

Also the application of the word 'replica' needs a little caution; every one after the original first one could be regarded as such.

Latest SR suggests the Saint will be finished in April/May this year and outshopped in BR black initially......

If true (rather than an advance April Fool item) that would seem perverse. Lady of Legend represents an early generation of Saints. Did any of those survive into BR days?

2903 Lady of Lynn lasted until August 1952, and was one of the last 7 of this class to be withdrawn, with one other also going in August as well and the last 4 going in 1953.

It's true, it's for a photo charter, then it's meant to be repainted into GWR green. Quite why you'd want to phot a loco in 1910s condition in 1950s livery is beyond me...

Timeline Events are organising a series of fundraising photo charters on completion of the loco, in BR Black livery.

I think its only 1 side that is to be painted ala City of Truro all those years back, plus they will use the tender from 5322 (who is 100 this year!) which means the tender does not need painting.

If you read the information about the Saint going into BR black. It is for one set of photocharters. Upon completing the charters she will go into GWR green.

The charters are not going to raise a huge amount of money - £60 x 35 x 2 = £4200 - and it risks alienating many who have contributed/will contribute to the build costs.

... from which you also have to subtract the cost of painting to find the net benefit...

Is a coat of paint on one side for a couple of days really going to alienate people, livery means more to people that I imagined, I contributed to the project and if they said that in order to speed raising the money they wanted to paint her pink for a day or so I would be happy that they were trying to get her a) finished and b) the books straight. In doing this they now have a public deadline to work to which will offset many of the criticisms often thrown at the GWS so seems a win win for all.

From even the Timeline Events advert:

"Understandably, many of the donors to the Saint Project felt strongly that the engine should appear first in GWR livery"

We have waited quite a long time for this new build/conversion to be completed (see the 2999 website for timeline and history) in late Edwardian form and finish so I guess it won't hurt too much to wait just a little longer for 2999 to appear in GWR green. Regardless of the temporary early BR scheme, 2999 will fill an important missing link in 20th Century steam locomotive "interpretation" and it is fortunate that this gap will now soon be filled. I would assume that there are a fair few people alive who remember the last members of this class in the late 40s early 50s but probably no-one alive who can fondly recall the 1910 GWR livery at 1st hand, which may explain the reason for the temporary BR livery. In any event, 2999 will soon be resplendent in form and finish representative of what might be called the zenith of UK steam railways and I for one would love to see it displayed alongside the NRM's Lode Star (for a limited period of course!).

What is the condition of Lode Star regarding originality, and is steaming her again (with the NRM's permission of course) feasible ?

I believe steaming Lode Star won't happen, same sort of thing as 4073.
