    Congratulations to our roving locomotive!

We are delighted to announce that the Talyllyn Railway’s locomotive No 3 ‘Sir Haydn’ is the winner of a recent on-line poll to find the ‘Everything GWR Engine of the Year 2013’, run by the website ‘Everything GWR’. This follows No 3’s highly successful nationwide tour last year when it attended various galas and events. During its tour it was also hauled on a flat truck along both the West Somerset and Severn Valley Railways, which created a lot of publicity and raised the locomotive’s profile considerably.

Originally built in 1878 for the Corris Railway, No 3 came under the ownership the Great Western Railway between 1930 and 1948 following the GWR’s take-over of the Corris line. It then passed to the nationalised railway in 1948 before being sold to the Talyllyn Railway in 1951.

No 3 is now on display in the Engine House at Highley on the Severn Valley Railway, where it will remain on show for several more months before returning to Tywyn for an overhaul and a return to active duties on the Talyllyn.

It was at the Engine House during the Severn Valley’s recent Spring Steam Gala that the presentation of a plaque was made by Howard Parker, owner of the ‘Everything GWR’ website. Several Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society members were present on the day including the Society’s Publicity Officer, Ellis Jacklin, who received the award on behalf of the Society.

A spokesperson for the Railway said:

‘Those on the Talyllyn have always known what a great locomotive No.3 is, and it is very gratifying to know that it has now been recognised by the wider railway enthusiast community. It is also testament to the hard work that took place over the last year to arrange No.3’s tour, and those who assisted with it. We are also grateful to those railways that offered us a chance to participate in their events.’
