Here's a cryptic clue for you......someone in the last 48 hours of posts in this thread has unintentionally come very close to the water carrier answer.

I'm not sure the SVR will be too happy that you've converted the flying pig into a water carrier tbh... I hope you've at least repainted her green!

Have there not been cases when 6024 has switched from air to vac following air pump problems and hauled air braked vehicle at rear of set effectively as a swinger ? I could be wrong

Got mine this morning, unfortunately no picture of a streamlined castle. A bit of info about 6100 though.

my money is still on a converted mk 1 full brake fitted with internal water tanks , either that or a last minite loco change to something with a larger water capicity and two tenders

Believe this happened on one of the early Torbays, but ran at reduced speed (25mph ?) to Exeter, probably to clear the line as much as anything else.

I can see where your coming from though, is one swinger in a train of 12 or so vehicles all braked as per the book really that much of an issue ?.

I still think that the whole 5029 streamlining was actually a bluff to divert attention from the real castle works being undertaken at Tyseley.

5043 is being painted in the same livery as 5322 and fitted with pannier tanks ala some of the Dean Goods that went to WWI - should get the capacity up to where it needs to go!

Will it have the riffles as well? - That would be a good way to stop the tresspassers!

It's certainly much less of an issue than a light engine movement with 5043 and it's own tender vac braked followed by over 60 tons of unbraked swinger with 9,000 gals of water slopping around ! There would have to be some such moves on the day and that would upset NR just a tad. In reality we know that at least one of these moves would be with a much reduced load in the second tender but NR would not look at in that light. Frankly, if 5043 was my loco I would also be more than a bit apprehensive of such an unbraked load behind my tender!!!

On p.16 of Steam Railway there is an enticing offer - if you can correctly the guess how Tyseley is going to quench the thirst of 5043 for the non - stop journey, you could get a free standard class ticket for one of the runs.

Sorry guys I'm not open to bribes.:tape:
All the clues are in this thread!!!!!
As there is now an official competition, I will be making no further comment on the subject of the water carrier.

Well that rules my conversion of 5043 to "steam outline" ala Minature railway style - well it would of solved the water issue!

With that information its clear to me that when running low on water, a converted Lancaster bomber will swoop down and members of the crew will pass buckets of water down to members of the Tyseley support crew standing on a specially converted and roofless Mk 1 BK, who will then feed the water into 5043's tender, any left over can then be popped into the Express Dairies livered 6 - wheeled milk tanker for later use.

After all this time, I'm amazed I could see it right from the start... :flypig: :thumb:

No, No. They're going more modern than a Lancaster! A fund raising flight for the Vulcan will be involved.
It will be deputising for "Blues & Two Tones" with a low-level pass around Didcot. Bomb bay doors will open and drop, with pin-point accuracy, a few thousand gallons of water into a specially designed scoop (built by Tyseley's engineers) on top of the tender. Also, if there's heavy rain on the day, the scoop is shaped such that they may get enough to get back without watering at Bristol. If it's dry then the Vulcan will just have to have another water drop.

Here are some more entirely sensible ideas for water carrying devices...

    1. A large fluorescent pink water balloon which rests on top of the tender, with a tube running into the tender filler. Can be refilled at Bristol no problem, and when back at Paddington can be folded away for use next time. Of course, the fireman will have to mind where he swings his shovel, or Brunel's billiard table could become Brunel's ornamental lake... :bathbaby:

    2. Large water tanks on a converted snowplough traveling on the train..................................which could then be used by the Vulcan AND Lancaster to refill with water while on the move in preparation for passing water down to the support crew on the Mk1 BK somewhere East of Swindon. :plane:

When you think about it, there really is nothing to it... :eyebrows:

now where is the Western at the moment, couple her inside and shove the castle all the way problem solved
or better still if Tangmere is back yet, use her instead to show what a proper engine can do lets see shoving the castle and pulling 10 or 11 bogies , easy

Sounds great! Except I actually want to get somewhere, not spending all day struggling to get out of Paddington. There'd be more wheelspin than a rally track!! (especially with those frankly terrifying mildly moist rails, eeeek!!) :boxing:

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to take cover ... :painkiller: :fencing:
