According to the FB friends of NNR page, the NRM has said a very definite NO to the J17 being returned to running order.

Because it'll no longer be original if it was? I have a friend who is so obsessed by the originality of the items in his care that if he asks to have them repaired, you're not allowed to clean them before or after you work on them...

I think it's true to say that there has been enthusiasm in the past decade or so towards larger engines, as part of a steady move away from the 1980's industrial-only era.

Current policy is to continue to explore a variety of different options that are right for the railway. Part of this particular strategy has seen a return of selected industrials alongside others.

It is only my personal opinion, but I enjoy a taste of everything and whilst I wouldn't want to go back to a fleet of all-industrial tank engines, I think a blend of large and small, BR and industrial, is proving popular with visitors and supporters of the railway.

Always thought a Jinty would be perfect for the line. Or an Ivatt 2 mogul.

If my memory is correct, the NNR made an offer to buy what was left of 47564 at the MRC but was rejected. Pity about this. 47493 is an ideal loco for one of my local lines - the Spa Valley - and I'm looking forward to seeing it in steam hopefully this year. Given that the NNR is a similar length and with a smilar maximum gradient (1 in 80 as opposed to 1 in 88 on the Spa), it's a huge shame that seemingly unloved 47564 was denied what could have been a very useful future.

It’s a shame indeed. One small detail is that I think it was the M&GN Society that tried to acquire 47564 (though in many people’s minds the Society and NNR are one)

Looks like it’s s spending most of this year away from its new base! I thought it was taking its place in the GWSR home fleet?

It is, but no different to one of our other residents Dinmore Manor, which spent its first couple of summers at Paignton or Minehead along with other short term visits before settling down a bit more.

Wonderful that the hard-working staff and magnificent volunteers were recognised at the HRA Awards, picking up accolades in 4 categories - a fantastic achievement.

Hannah Drury, Visitor Experience & Marketing Manager, was named as the sector’s Rising Star having made a material difference since joining the NNR and quickly being promoted to the Senior Management Group.

The line was Highly Commended in the Railway of the Year Category (the only standard-gauge line to make the shortlist) and received similar plaudits for Weybourne Station (in Station of the Year) and the line’s Peer Support Group in the Innovation category.

53809 reaches her centenary this year and is hauling trains throughout half-term week, kicking off NNR’s 50th Anniversary year.

Any truth in the rumour that the 7F will be repainted in LMS livery?

Yes - this week is the final chance to see her in BR black. Further details to be announced in the coming days.
