So loco change at Grosmont? That will suit me fine, we’re planning on going through to the coast!

Steam on the 12.35 from Whitby? Well, if that's still the case on Saturday, that'll be nice. I keep missing steam on the Whitby run this year in my previous 3 visits.

With an otherwise all steam service the 12.35 from Whitby is normally diagrammed for a diesel as far as Grosmont to allow time for the Pickering based steam loco to be examined and serviced at Grosmont. However, under the present circumstances it is steam.

I know but on my past three visits getting the 12.35 has fitted in best with my day. This Saturday is a little different due to the rail strikes.

Oooh - any prospect of Steam on the 9:20am tomorrow?
Also, am I right in thinking all trains have a buffet where we can get a cuppa?

re buffet, whilst all trains do have a buffet car (or micro buffet), there is no guarantee they will be open as it is all subject to staffing. Whilst it’s often announced at Pickering if there is no on-board buffet service for a particular train, I would always recommend buying your cuppa from the tea shop there and taking it with you on board.

Thank you to everyone who posted updates regarding the steam situation over the last few days! Originally we were going to take out an annual pass and do two trips over to the NYMR last week, a Pickering-Goathland-Grosmont day and a Grosmont-Whitby day but with the lack of steam in the end everyone decided to put off taking out an annual pass to October half term. But as my sons favourite place in the world is Grosmont sheds (along with Steam Works at Sheffield Park and Engine Shed at Highley!) we still wanted to take him so decided on a Whitby shopping day with a stop off at Grosmont on the way back - and we left it as late as possible in the week in the hope of steam, a decision which paid off with 5428 being out last Thursday! Short video from the 11.09am arrival and 12.35pm departure at Whitby while the others shopped and 2.35pm arrival and 4.40pm departure from Grosmont alongside the associated diesel shunts. Thanks as always to all involved in what must be difficult times with the fire risk! Hopefully we will be back in October half term and get to have a ride behind steam.

Had a great day on the NYMR myself today! 5428 accidentally set fire to a small section of the line side on its way back to Whitby so 1710 back to Grosmont we stopped to extinguish it - great work by the crew to ensure it was safe. 37 sounded awesome too!

Can anyone advise if there are any reliable ways to know when the DMU is in use please? I'm aware that it isn't favoured due to its limited capacity so has quite specific duties, but nevertheless I would quite like to visit the line on a day it's running and the more advance notice the better as that helps when booking accommodation. Or are all it's duties short notice/and hoc?

King Charles III has apparently visited the NYMR today in a train hauled by "Flying Scotsman" and t&t by a class 67 diesel. The train ran from York to Pickering via the Esk Valley line, so a very nice scenic run. No problem with fire risk, it would appear, despite current bans, but presumably the class 67 was doing the bulk of the work. I wonder if HRH was disappointed at not getting to Whitby for fish & chips!
