If you're around on Tuesday come and say hello. I'm on the 09.25 Pickering - Whitby. 75029/D7628............I think!

The NYMR really should pay me to stay away. 61994 booked on long Whitby today, so out of bed 04:45 for second Wednesday running to head north to catch at Goathland. Needless to say it ran Grosmont - Whitby and back and then failed ....!!

In theory the railway is slightly better this week than I expected. There are 5 locos for 5 duties and I raised an eyebrow on how they are using them - assuming 100% availability seems a little dangerous with no obvious plan B. Today they had 4 locos from 10:30 for 5 duties. One return was cancelled and the four used VERY intensively on the rest e.g. 76079 on the 10:25 arrival at Grosmont ex Pickering replaced 61994 and returned on 10:33 to Pickering about 25 late.

I even got caught by the 25! 76079 on 1200 ex Pickering changed to D7628 outside the shed rather than Grosmont station! This allowed 76079 to get on shed ASAP.

Beware of Thursday if anyone there. I understand 61994's problem isn't serious, but it needs to be cold to fix.

I'll warn everyone when I next plan to go so you can stay clear!

Have heard rumours that 45428 may not be too far off coming back into traffic, but don't know how real they are.

Should have gone yesterday (Tuesday). It all ran very well, really.
As said, the Big Tent's problem is nothing serious but can't be fixed until (relatively) cold.

Paid a visit yesterday (wednesday) thanks for the offer unfortunatly haven't been able to get any signal until now! Enjoyable day for me and the good lady I got my wish and enjoyed a nice bit of type 2 action to Whitby! Also had a pleasant run with 75029. Was rather impressed with the climb we made up to Goathland lovely noise coming from the chimmney.

This getting silly. Out of bed yesterday (9th) even earlier for my next attempt (lost count of how many attempts) to get 61994 and, yes, it failed at Pickering early yesterday. D7628 wasn't feeling well too, so another average day on NYMR, but the practice of running a railway with no resources is paying off and other than a bit of a late start a.m., they delivered an almost perfect day of operation. 60007 being back has helped of course, working with 75029 on long Whitby and 76079 short Whitby, with the 37 the rest. The 25 was better later and went to collect 61994 at New Bridge to tow back to Grosmont.

The NYMR even under stress offers remarkable steam sequences. Just after 1400 at Grosmont yesterday - 1300 ex Pickering arrives with 60007, loco off and runs through station to shed, 76079 takes charge of train, 75029 arrives from Whitby and finally the two class 4s depart almost simultaneously, 76079 to Whitby and 75029 to Pickering.

Or arranging our own visits around yours?;)

Actually I had similar experiences some years ago when visiting the NYMR Spring and Autumn Galas in hopes of riding behind 49395 and 53809.

Time and again I rode up from Pickering full of hope, and sighed when I saw them standing cold on Grosmont shed yard. So I know just how you feel.

Meanwhile on the Railway it seems that a last minute bit of negotiation has allowed an incoming charter by Steam Dreams to run to Minehead tomorrow - albeit not with steam. Notice that there is nothing on this thread about it just the usual chuntering.

I would have thought that this will have involved quite a lot a work behind the scenes to accommodate the charter. Worth mentioning I would have thought?

Al - it's possible that the reason that there is little discussion of a Minehead charter on this thread is that this is the NYMR thread!

    Whitby, anyone? ;)

    http://www.nymr.co.uk/2015/06/new-managing-director-for-north-yorkshire-moors-railway/

One of the North’s most popular tourist attractions, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, has appointed Chris Price to become the next managing director.

Chris Price will join NYMR from the Talyllyn Railway, the historic narrow-gauge railway in Mid-Wales, where he is general manager. His move to North Yorkshire will see him take over from Philip Benham, NYMR’s current managing director, who retires in the autumn after eleven years with the railway.

Mike Child, chairman of the Railway Trust’s operating company said:

“The managing director’s role is a particularly challenging one, working with several hundred volunteers and staff. Responsibilities range from making sure the railway, vintage steam engines and carriages are in good working order, to ensuring every passenger enjoys their experience, visiting our stations and travelling on our trains.

In Chris, we have found someone of great experience with a strong record of achievement on another award-winning railway. As a heritage charity with no public funding, Chris will play a leading role in ensuring that the NYMR continues to enthuse future generations of visitors to the North York Moors. We are confident that he is the right person to further develop NYMR as a vibrant heritage business, enabling us to grow and improve the visitor experience on the railway. We warmly welcome him on board.”

Chris Price commented; “The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is known by millions, who have either enjoyed a journey through the line’s spectacular scenery, or who have seen it on television. I am honoured that the Directors feel that I am the right person to take on this huge responsibility, and am very much looking forward to the challenge.”

Philip Benham added; “I am delighted at Chris’s appointment and know he will lead NYMR on to even greater success in the future. How appropriate that he comes from the Talyllyn, the World’s first preserved railway, to NYMR which today is the World’s most popular heritage railway!”

Chris will take up the role in October, when he will be responsible for the daily services between Whitby and Pickering through the stunning North York Moors National Park.

My colleague and I paid a flying visit to Grosmont today as I was working not-too far away- always nice to pop in! Station seemed fairly busy- and also sounded like there had been a bit of an issue on one of the service trains (I seem to be the bringer of bad luck each time I go to the NYMR.....) Nice to see 76079 on the Whitby service and have a brief chat with the footplate crew- box on the Pickering end.

Lovely lemon Meringue pie in the cafe too!

Not really your fault. A passenger taken seriously ill on the train, which had to wait at Levisham for an ambulance, which got lost and patient had to wait over an hour! Then patient could not be moved off train. In all, some 90 minute delay. If the length of delay had been known, alternative arrangements could have been put into operation but, when you are told an ambulance is on its way, you expect it to arrive shortly after.

    Hi Steve,

Crikey- sounds like a bit of an epic, hope the outcome was a positive one in the end.

Can any kind soul provide an update on the status of the Black 5's on the NYMR please? Is one awaiting retyred wheels from Ian Riley's works?

The NYMR website shows two" home-based" Black 5's, with the following notes: 44806 "available for traffic" 45428 "regular use". However the loco fleet notes look a bit out of date as they refer to the "start of the 2015 season".

    Thanks

Both are not running at the moment. 45428 is receiving repairs to piston covers and rods following a hydraulic incident, and also overdue winter maintenance but should be back soon. 44806 is receiving rather more extensive late running winter maintenance, including a new tender tank and I would think it is unlikely to run, at least in the peak season, this year. I don't think either has been retyred unless it is bogie or tender wheels. Lastly, reports in NELPG news suggest that 63395 is getting close to re-entering traffic, albeit with a period of running-in to complete first.

If 44806 is waiting a tender tank. and 45428 is laid up with bottom end repairs. Assuming 44806 is fit to run. What is preventing the swapping of tenders to get at least one of the 5s working

44806 needs work done on the loco as well as the tender, so is not runnable. Its supposed to be quicker to do 45428 .

How bad was 44806's tender tank if its being done now as opposed to when it's withdrawn for its upcoming overhaul?
