I can only guess that the answer to that, but "bad enough to need doing now" would seem to be the obvious answer, otherwise they would have waited.

Two steam and two diesels shown on the website for todays services, however given how dry everything is,--but maybe this is a theoretical question-- can the NYMR maintain it's services purely with diesels if the fire risk is severe enough?

I don't think fire risk is a major problem on NYMR although I admit they have had fires this year. They do have systems in place if there is considered a risk without banning steam.

The main issue currently remains the dire shortage of steam locos. The two in use today are it, the two they have working - full stop! The two 20s there for last w/e's Gala I believe are having summer holiday at Grosmont, although does this help? The two home diesels are working so much they must be due some attention by the fitters.

Managers must really be sweating on the Gold Timetable which starts soon and hardly any motive power. If 45428/63395 will ride to the rescue remains to be seen. Not sure how long 61994 is stopping (currently under repair) - I've given up on ever getting it on NYMR!. And haven't heard much about 61264 recently, so looks to be some way down the return to traffic list. I dare say all will be OK for motive power come late October .....

David, is it that they try and do all repairs/overhauls in-house, rather than maybe contracting out some work in entirety, ie Black 5's to Rileys maybe? Or is contracting out just too expensive? ( In generality, not implying Ian Riley is expensive as such).

That also depends on if their are contractors with capacity at the moment to do the things needed in a reasonable time scale I would of thought.

44806's tender tank is being done by a well-known contractor. 80135's new firebox is similarly out to contract.

I would like to think that was the case..........

...I think I worked that part out for myself.....:Saywhat:

I never heard of any issues with the tender in its Llangollen days, but then I wasn't a frequent visitor. Seems like an unusually tall order for winter maintenance is all, so just how bad is it that it can't wait two years til the heavy? For instance, does it leak? if so, how badly?

Stopped on Thursday, I think. Various necessary minor repairs. Hopefully back before long.

Rumours today that 61994 is out for about a week, but 45428 should be back within the next week and 63395 not long after.

I think I've heard "till September", which presumably means till at least the end of August. It would be nice if it were still there for the ASG, though.

Just noticed a post by Ian Riley on his forum following an enquiry about 61264 and what appears to be wheelset repairs. Ian commented on 21st June that "physical repairs" had commenced, following a period of investigation into a problem.
Sorry not aware of the original problem, but presumably 61264 is without some of its wheels at present.

Luckily enough I am on holiday in the North Yorkshire Moors next week and am hoping to persuade the others at least a station visit to the NYMR is a good idea! Would anyone be able to tell me which way the current working steam engines are facing and if possible which ones are scheduled for which trips on next weeks timetable. Many thanks!

Loco's normally face south ( to work the bank up to Goathland). As for what will be working have a look at NYMR web site although not always up to date. 76079, 75029 and 63395 are possible. Suck it and see time, I'm afraid.

http://www.nymrdiesel.co.uk/ will list what trains are planned to be diesel hauled (so by that you can work out which ones will be steam)

Assuming 'steam engines' in the plural is expecting a lot isn't it! The railway was down to one working steam loco recently. 63395 returned to traffic this week, so at least there are now two. And adding to the earlier post, 60007 is back after its Scottish jaunt. So you might not do too badly next week, especially as I don't plan going until the Gold timetable at least, so my jinx on the railway won't be a problem!

As well as the nymrdiesel website already recommended, if you go via Pickering the day's roster is normally posted in the café or info office next to the booking office. The same data might be posted at Grosmont at the booking office, but I find this only happens infrequently.

I does make me think that why they did not make the move to hire in 34092 seeing it was available if they were that short of steam locos.

I believe the NYMR were looking at the loco however I understand the ELR became the preferred option.
