Sadly, it seems you won't be getting your freight run with 60163 this time.

 

It came from GCR, which isn't mainline connected. Things really couldn't be going much worse right now...that's about all I feel I can say!

With the postponement of Tornado (again), and the inability to source a replacement at such short notice, there has been a lot of reorganising going on, and as result, freight will be involved over the entire bank holiday weekend:

On Friday 24th "Auxiliary Action" will see BoB Class 34081 92 Squadron assuming the identity of 34111 "Royal Auxiliary Air Force" and hauling the fully fitted express freight rake. Places still available, book here: https://nvr.org.uk/product.php/497/auxiliary-action

On Saturday/Sunday/Monday the freight will be out on all three days as part of the "Locomotive Legends" weekend with Brake Van rides available (£10 supplement applies). Fish & Chip special on Saturday evening and various double/triple headed combinations using combinations of 34111/55013/45041.

 

The last couple of weeks have been pretty manic - finishing off the rake, a loaded test run behind the Peak for the vac brakes, a Deltic hauled freight driving day, a trip to the Northampton & Lamport Railway to weather a loco, a Southern Goods themed freight photo charter with 92 Squadron running as 34111 'Royal Auxiliary Air Force', and finally a whole bank holiday weekend of express fitted freight being run multiple times each day with brake van rides and a variety of loco haulage.

Thanks! It's been very satisfying seeing the rake being used so much - and finally the railway actually ran it as a demo freight as part of a larger event. The only thing we didn't get done was the lettering on my wagon, but it still looked the business in the rake

Oddly enough, I sent my brother a picture of the tar tanker the other Sunday when I had a run behind '55 013' before it left: I explained what the plan was for it. By a coincidence, the latest Hornby Railway Collectors Association magazine discusses tank wagons in some detail.

 

There's also a weighty tome by R. Tourret on the Petroleum Tank Wagons of Great Britain, which is absolutely exhaustive in its detail. I think Peterborough Tar Distillers do get a mention in it. And let's not forget the Hornby model of same!

 

More work on the tar tanker (I am told that, technically, both the Hornby model and our actual tanker are historically innacurate for Peterborough Tar Company - those are 20T tankers and the originals were only 14T). A multi-tool appears to be ideal for stripping the tar off the outside of the tank though

It would have been nice to get John Bann of 'Jodel' fame to do some Hornby-Dublo tanks in the Peterborough Tar Distillers livery

 

A session in the tunnel and a bit of train spotting...lots of enforced breaks while the smoke cleared after each run of 656 to Yarwell and back.

As you've been in the tunnel @big.stu , what's the condition of the Ruston 165 like?

 

It's not in the tunnel - it moved to the four road shed a while back during a previous shunt. It's on the road closest to the heavy overhaul shed. I thought I had several photos, but I can only find this one, taken during one of the winter work sessions at Wansford when we were doing brakes.

I would describe it as rough, part dismantled, and have heard mixed views as to whether it is a runner or not...
