No I do not currently volunteer
I've just dug out this thread to find that the last question asked is also the question I have! So, is there any update on Battersby trains?

I keep checking here and on the NYMR website, but there seems to be no recent news about this gala - less than a month away now. Is there anybody out there who is in the know, and would they be able to update please?

Heard mutterings 5322 might not be repaired in time following her failure at Bodmin earlier in the summer. Wonder if a replacement is being sourced?

That's sometimes the trouble with 3 Gala events in quick succession, and until the motive power is known for sure, cannot guarantee running to Battersby I would presume.
I always book week off for both Steam Galas, if it runs I use it and enjoy. It was timetabled to run to Battersby for Spring Gala, can't remember now if that was Gala when cancelled due to problems on line. Will check my photos and notes later.
Time slots on that line are always tight to.

Can't believe it's failed again. When I was at Llangollen, I was in the front compartment of the last train on the Friday night and the lads who'd come over with 5322 were being really rude about the Llangollen steam boys, saying they had no idea what they were doing and they were never going to let them have one of their engines again and in quite an arrogant way, putting on Welsh accents. Pride cometh before a fall!

With memories of 5336 as a regular performer on the Taunton - Barnstaple line in the early 60s, I'm sad to hear of 5322's problems. One way or another let's hope that she returns to health; if not in time for NYMR gala then in time to appear at others. I'd been looking forward to seeing her at Bodmin.

Gala events nomrally see the guest engines operating on services between Grosmont and Pickering as that is where most of the gala crowd go to. That means that engines might swap for Whitby at Grosmont, while any Battersby run is normally one of the NYMR regulars - such as B1, Eric Tracey, 75029 etc. Could be a guest as it has happened before but is less likely given the Castle is the main attraction and the fact that one guest apparently has failed.

At the moment 5322 is off the cards and a replacement (GWR) loco is being sourced, although available ones for hire are few. Hopefully, an announcement soon. Home fleet locos should be: 29, 44806, 45428, 60007, 61264, 63395, 75029. 76079 might also make it to the party, fingers crossed.

There was a suggestion some time back that there might be a 'mini gala', using the GWR locos, either the weekend before, or after, the main gala weekend.
    Is that still a possibility?

Be nice to have another Manor after 7822 visit, or even a Hall but as you say not that many available at present. Hopefully some news soon though as quite interested in attending the gala.

No new news of replacement when asking there today.
Fingers crossed but with difficulty in hiring and Steam bans at York and area.

When does the basic timetable get released? Be nice to at least know what time to turn up, even if no diagrams have actually been allocated yet.

Reverting to an earlier part of the thread, I can see no reason why the Castle shouldn't run to Battersby, but the curves may preclude it going into Whitby - but that isn't a problem (or hasn't been in the past) as engines such as 60007/60163 have been used on Battersby runs with an engine change at Grosmont.

I'm surprised that the NYMR hasn't been able to arrange something with our friends at the SVR for another GW engine - I'd like to see 1501 on NYMR services, though water might be a concern.

If it isn't able to run to Battersby then I would suggest it isn't going to get to the NYMR in the first place seeing as it's unlikely to arrive on the back of a low loader.

Quite so. I thought that was implicit in the fact that it is visiting at all!

Seems like my wish has come true and 1501 has become he replacement engine for 5322. Should be an interesting visitor!

Water capacity is going to be interesting if it runs the whole length of the line on its own!
It's looking like a good line-up, though. 10-11 locos available over the weekend, barring last minute failures.

It should be interesting if no. 29 is working at the same time as 1501 (a favourite of mine, too) - both feisty little performers! I'm looking forward to this gala as the time approaches.
