I've seen it suggested that it's a stylisation of Sunny South Sam, a character from SR publicity at the time:

Now you're talking. Sadly just too young to have seen 901, though I did get to see 3672 and 2253 running.

I still remember Chris Cubitt's words when he visited CVR with no.29.

Happily told us 926 never sounded right until she was unleashed to Battersby. That's when they got to hear what a Schools should sound like. Hopefully she'll be Whitby passed again, and we can experience this once more!

Don't understand why some people can only rate steam locos on their sound generating capabilities. They were made to pull trains reliably, that's all.

Is there any chance of the Q7 being overhauled again? I've lost track of this one... Is it at Shildon these days?

As a NELPG member I would suggest overhauling the Q7 is the last thing thing the group needs, nice idea though. With the J27 back next year that will be all four group locos in operation and with an ageing membership succession planning is becoming ever more important and not forgetting finance. Having experienced the Q7 on the Moors I would love to see it back running. But unless somebody finds a huge pot of money to undertake an overhaul I would rather the group concentrate on its own locos.

With the NYMR starting to find its way again perhaps a new volunteer group could be formed to take the Q7 on. Funding might be an issue but I'm sure there would be strong support from the membership. The NYMR is in danger of becoming a "standard 4 and black five" operation, which is fine and sensible for day to day services but disappointing as the premier LNER/NER line.

Well the K1 has made a visit this year and thankfully the Q6 is operating. And last year the A4 was in steam, as was the B1. No. 29 is again not in steam as this does have some North East heritage.

I know the standard 4, black 5 operation might be good for day to day traffic, but I also like some of the standards and a mix of these with some NER/Eastern stuff is perfect. If the Q6 and B1 were running when the K1 goes to Scotland that would augment operations nicely.

Nice guy is Geoff. No reason why 34081 shouldn't make a return visit to the Moors. I'm sure she'll be in demand once back in traffic.

Wonder if anyone does know about whats happening tomorrow. I see the website has 76079 and 80072 down as running today. Wonder if anyone does know if the K1 is to be used? Its looking unlikely that it is, or that Id be told tonight.

    Any help would be brilliant.

Exactly so. For that matter I have never understood the obsession with 'clag' of a small minority of the diesel fraternity. To my mind if a diesel is kicking out that amount of gunge then it's either badly maintained, or badly driven, or overstressed.

Quite so, though EE diesels smoke quite badly when cold no matter how well maintained they are.

True enough, but under normal operating conditions demanding 'clag' is a bit like saying that a trip behind steam isn't worthwhile unless the engine cooks all the paint off its smokebox door.

80072 worked the last service to Pickering this evening and we left 45428 in position on shed at Grosmont for tomorrow's service. As 80072 cannot go through to Whitby, the class 25 will do that bit of her diagram. The K1 is stopped for washout I believe.

Been trying to get 62005 since it arrived Grosmont, but it has been elusive. Still getting over the shock recently of arriving Pickering for 12:00 which is fairly solidly a steam duty and finding D7628 .....! If the K1 comes out again before heading north must be getting marginal, but I'll watch next week and hope.

Well obviously if you are paying to travel on a train pulled by steam you can't see a lot of the loco. Therefore it's nice to get some action and be able to hear it otherwise you might as well be pulled by anything.

Deltics can produce more than their fair share of clag, especially on start up. :)

Agreed and sound is independent of livery, lighting conditions etc. For me the sound of a loco working hard stirs the soul.
