    Stop Press!

Unfortunately, due to a mechanical issue, King Edward I is unable to attend the gala.

Sir Nigel Gresley is undergoing repairs to the middle cylinder, availibility for the gala is still uncertain.

Not too bothered about the King. It's probably the one I would've gone out of my way not to photograph anyway!

It's a shame, a few of us up here in Yorkshire were looking forward to seeing how she would do. Oh well, another time maybe?

    Timetable for 1st weekend;

    http://www.nymr.co.uk/wp-content/upload ... eekend.pdf

Just a shame that pages 2 to 4 are headlined "Autumn Steam Gala 2010"

Uksteam has a second loco coming with 60019, causing much speculation!!

The full timetable with loco allocations will be available in the Spring Steam Gala brochure which will be available to purchase on the day.

Due to the late changes in loco availability, we will not be selling the brochure online this year.

So much for anybody being able to plan their visits by buying the brochure online in advance, very poor

Is it not because of uncertainty around what will and what won't be running?

    Probably Paul

But as it starts a week next Friday, so plenty of time yet.

I could say lots more but the NYMR faithful will shoot me down, so will say nothing.

    Best Regards

MrHillingdon is absolutely correct - we have faced near unprecidented problems with either completion of winter work or new issues and the current position is that locomotive availability is being assessed today before the brochure goes to press by close of play today. That will still not be in time to have the finished brochures available for post ahead of the first weekend.

What I hope will be possible will be each day having a planned locomotive usage against it - i.e. which loco will be used each day. This should enable passengers keen to ride behind a particular loco to plan their visits. With the theming of the days, there will be a "star" casyt each day (i.e. the locos revelant to the theme) and possibly the need for a couple more to run the service - and they the "unthemed" lcoos may be drawn from, the main pool nearer the time.

Can I take this opportunity to apologise for thsi situation - much of it is not of the NYMR's (or often anybody's) making and we will do our best both to put on the first class show our pasengers expect and deserve and keep potential and already planned visitors informed as matters develop.

Steven, whilst I can appreciate the problems that have been had in sorting out the timetabling, couldn't they be made avalible online in PDF format for a small fee (that possibly acts as a token towards the buying of a full gala brochure.)

We ended up doing that last year "by accident" (delays with printing) and I felt it worked quite well - it enabled a "working copy" of the timetable to be printed to be used and shoved in bags or pockets and then the hard copy was picked up during the event (quickly, just showing the e-mail receipt for payment) and could be kept as more of a true "souvenir".

What I don't know is whether this exposed any real difficulties but I will ask the question.

I have booked a B&B for the second weekend of this event, I wonder if anyone would care to help. I gather from videos and stills that it is possible to access the site of Bridge 30 from a footpath, but can anyone give me a location for the bridge? An OS co-ord would be nice.

    Regards

If you use the website "street map" and put "Goathland" as your search, you will get an OS map
If you look top left above the words Thomason Foss, it is one of the three bridges shown.

Here we go again, Andrew. You naively think that it is so simple to say what is going to be out for the gala. It's still a week away so you think that there is lots of time. Today, I think that 76079, 825, 30926, 44871 and 49395 are usable. People are busily working round the clock to get 53809, 60007, 63395, 45407 and 45428 ready, none of which are certain. The latter two may be steamable but neither are match fit and 45428 is still unproven with lots of niggles to sort out. With luck, some, if not all of these will play a part in the gala but those same people who are working on them have also got to maintain the runners and, if as so often happens, these fall down, attention has to be transferred to these because the NYMR has a service to run. 76079, 44871 and 49395 have all had to be stopped for unexpected repairs in the last couple of weeks, diverting precious manpower away from the others. 825 & 30926 may also have but personally I'm not aware of them. I seem to recall that only last week you were shouting with big smilies on another Forum because the Railway only had two serviceable steam locos (76079 & 30926) and had to use two diesels as substitute.
If you think that it is so easy, why don't you come and show us?

Steve, an NYMR faithful with both guns blazing.

We get the same enthusiasts asking the same questions, every time we run a gala.

As I've said in answer to them on another forum, it saddens me that so called enthusiasts can't be thankful for the fact that we have ANY steam locos running in daily service, 40 years after BR abolished them. They need to be stop being so pedantic, and just enjoy whatever is available.

But surely that's what a gala's for? :s I wouldn't go to a football match without knowing which teams were playing, I wouldn't go to a gig without knowing which bands were playing, etc...

Obviously, the NYMR understands the frustrations of potential passengers wanting to know what is running at Gala Events - if just any loco would do, nobody would spend £10,000s bringing in guests!

At the same time, we are running a service that needs 3 or 4 steam locos 6 days out of 7 at present and have not entered the daily running with a particularly large fleet due to problems encountered with winter work. Don't ask how many loco we have in steam today (for various reasons)!

Subject to the vaguries of aged machinery and daily usage between now and the Gala, the position (confirmed by our Traction & Rolling Stock Engineer yesterday morning) is currently expected to be:

    30926, 44871, 45407, 49395, 53809, 76079 all expected to be fully serviceable

45428 serviceable but needs to accumulate running mileage between now and the Gala

60007 A4 Loco Society and NYMR working on it - hoped may make later stages of Gala

63395 Not yet know if it will make it

6619, 825, 45212 will be Unavailable. (825 just stopped this week with firebox issues)

Guests 60019 & 1744 expected to be available.

Currently negotiating for at least 1 further guest - hopefully confirmation very shortly

There isn't going to be brochure due to the uncertainties but locos operating will be posted on the NYMR Website when details available - the order of the themed days will require some amendment to tie in with expected availability
