Well I saw three locos in steam at Pickering on Friday, so I don't know why you think there are only two of the home fleet working.

Any word on what will be working the Battersby run? Worth the entry fee alone if 75029 performance from last year is repeated!

The Q6 has only just returned at the 11th hour for Easter, so original message was probably correct when written. The fact remains that the poor power situation on NYMR continues and is dire currently.

The post I was replying to was written today, not Friday. While the situation is bad it is expected to improve.

So the Q6 returned to traffic just as it was required, big deal.

The K1 should arrive from Carnforth soon for a short stay before the Jacobites start, and other summer visitors are expected before too long. 44806's new tender body has arrived and the loco is expected to be back in traffic for the summer peak. Lastly there's 61264, over which there seems to be a veil of secrecy, but if the cracks in its wheels have been repaired successfully it shouldn't take too long to get it back in service once they are back at Grosmont - I'm sure NYMR staff will help with the reassembly work to speed things up if required.

Pleased to hear that the home fleet is looking better than it was a couple of weeks ago. Has there been any updates on the standard tank or coal tank as to whether they will make it as the visitors are likely to be a deciding factor as to whether to come up from London

80072 has been announced as undamaged, so there would seem to be no reason why that can't come. There continues to be positive sounds about the coal tank, so I for one remain hopeful for that.

One question I have, is that if 45212 is due back in service very soon, will the Jacobite need all 4 locos (45407, 44871, 45212 and 62005). If not, is there a chance we may get one of them for the peak season?

From what I've heard, 45212 will be back on the NYMR for some, if not all, of the season. However, this has not come from that impeccable source known as Rumour Control so may be unfounded.;)

    Scottish Branch Line Gala 6 – 8 & 13 – 15 May 2016

This event page is being updated, please check back for more information soon.

From the 6th– 8th May and 13th-15th May, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway celebrates the motive power and stunning scenery of Scottish branch lines. Rail enthusiasts and families alike are sure to enjoy two great weekends of locomotive action during its Scottish Branch Line Gala.

The event will see a number of visiting locomotives on the iconic NYMR line, including BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4 Tank steam locomotive 80072, masquerading as 80126 and Class 26 diesel locomotive 26038. Home fleet steam locomotive, 76079, will also be dressed in the full spirit of the Scottish branch line gala, being re-numbered as 76001. Popular Black 5 steam locomotive, 45428 ‘Eric Treacy’, is also due a subtle facelift before the two special weekends. And diesel locomotive BR Class 37 37264 will be showing her prowess alongside BR Class 101 Diesel Multiple Unit 101685 “Daisy”.

The East Coast Main line will be represented with 55007 Deltic hauled trains along the Esk Valley line to Battersby.

Scottish Ales will be on sale at Goathland and Levisham Stations. TBC

During the event visitors can explore iconic railway stations including Pickering, Goathland, Levisham and Grosmont Station, all of which serve tasty refreshments and have an on-site gift shop where guests can purchase a souvenir to symbolise their fantastic day out.

62005 was never scheduled for the gala, operating during April on the NYMR then off for its Scottish jaunt on the Jacobite.

Since 3650 got withdrawn earlier in the year are Didcot not down to only 4144 and the railmotor in operation (unless the King has had its modifications and repairs finished?) so I can imagine they are possibly not that keen for it to be elsewhere?

Is there an issue with road movements even for lighter locos from Keighley too now- I guess eliminating 1054.

I hope they can get 61264 and 44806 back in traffic soon- how long does 44806 have left in 'ticket' once it returns?

Unfortunately two of the three scheduled locomotives for the event have become unavailable, the coal tank is still trapped at the KWVR due to the bridge repairs not being completed on time following the winter floods. The decision to postpone was not taken until Monday 4th April and it was still looking hopeful up till then. 4414 has become unavailable following the discovery that the piston valve bores were worn beyond acceptable limits. We have tried to source replacement locomotives, but most railways seem to have their loco fleet fully committed at this time. We will still be running the gala timetable and there will be much to see but we will not be charging gala prices during the event. People who have already pre-bought tickets are being contacted this week. – Chris Price, General Manager.

I can't see why 63395 wouldn't be there, as far as I know it only has the Flying Scotsman and the Shildon Bash later this year in July. The K1 certainly won't be there, as the Jacobite starts on the 9th, so I would think it will leave about a week before. I can't see 61264 or 44806 being back by then either.
While it is disappointing that the event has had to be changed, it is better than still calling it a steam gala and having diesels on every other service. It should still be a good event, and there is now a definite theme!

Well, I'm sure that if you could produce a better offer, the NYMR management would welcome you with open arms. When you try, I think that you'll find that there aren't any other locos available as substitutes.

So in theory the situation may arise you arrive on a "branch service" behind a Standard Tank at Grosmont, to change over and get a Deltic on a mainline service? Sounds brilliant - just a shame I'm booked to go Swanage.

Doesn't sound naff at all! The addition of a deltic and 26 make it a lot more tempting! Shall have to see if I can get up for this gala!

As this comes from someone involved with the Churnet Valley who have pulled off superb galas when planned locos don't turn up it deserves being taken seriously. I seem to remember that Duke of Gloucester couldn't attend their gala some years ago and when I went they had 5542 from way down south and a pannier from South Devon etc etc both sourced at very short notice.
Swanage have a diesel gala on the weekend of the NYMR gala so there is Manston, 31806, an M7 and another standard tank presumably available and all suitable for the original idea of a Branch line gala, and that's only one railway to think of.

Despite the above I don't quite know why so many only seem to be able to think of visiting the NYMR for a gala weekend. Even if you go on a day when only two steam locos are out you are going to get steam action and spectacle.
