On this day in History - Mystery Excursion – 26th July 1970

A popular business venture by British Rail in the late 1960’s and 1970’s was the Mystery Excursion where you bought a ticket for a day out by train without knowing where you were going. In this case through knowing someone in the local control office I actually knew where I was going when I boarded the train at Nottingham station. We left behind two class 25’s (7524, 7649) for a run to Morecambe on the north west coast via Derby, the Hope Valley and Manchester.

    Class 03 (2130, 2386/88), Class 08 (3037, 3246/53/54/83/86/93, 3310/40/71, 3404/05/10, 3571/73/77/80/81/89, 3783, 3845/54, 4030), class 11 (12098), class 17 (8521), class 20 (8136/59), class 24 (5012/90/96/99), class 25 (5156/69/72/73/74/77/81/97, 5227/67/76/81/87, 7518/24/51/70/72, 7608/35/36/49/73/76), class 27 (5359), class 37 (6802/68), class 40 (202/13/49/94, 300), class 45 (13/44/57/96/97, 111/23), class 47 (1508/15, 1633/35, 1850, 1946/56), class 50 (418), class 84 (E3038)

    Locomotives of note are:
3037 which on withdrawal in December 1972 became snowplough ADB966510, which was not a success and was broken up in March 1979, 12098 which would be withdrawn a few months later in February 1971, sold to NCB for further use, entered preservation but was broken up as recently as June 2006, 8521 withdrawn in October 1968 and used by BR Research at Derby as a mobile Generator, broken up in October 1978, E3038 was at the Derby Research Centre at a time when the whole class was stored unserviceable, 5359 what was this Scottish engine doing so far south around Preston, and finally train engine 7524 which would be an early class 25 casualty due to accident damage. On the 5th August 1976 25174 (7524) coupled to 25030 was involved in an accident (being hit by runaway wagons) at Aylesbury. 25174 suffered a crushed cab, however whatever damage 25030 suffered was not as visible. After the collision 25030 and 25174 were initially taken to Cricklewood, where 25030 was withdrawn. On the 9th August 1976 both headed north to Derby Works, 25030 for component recovery and breaking up and 25174 for evaluation. They arrived just in time for the Annual Open Day, with 25174 parked in the Works arrival sidings, a location where its crushed cab was visible to most visitors who toured the Works. The evaluation proved to be the end of 25174 as it was withdrawn in September 1976 and it would lie rotting at Derby until June 1978 before being broken up

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On this day in History - Lincolnshire – 27th July 1969

A visit to a couple of Lincolnshire Motive Power Depots forty one years ago.
    Lincoln (40A)
    Class 03 (2024/26), class 08 (3347, 3533), class 10 (3613/14/18/19, 4061/75), class 25 (7502), class 37 (6809/15).
    Lincoln Central
    Class 31 (5555), class 37 (6707, 6802).
    Immingham (40B)
    Class 03 (2025), class 08 (3195, 3427, 3506/07/49), class 10 (4050/51), class 11 (12118/25/35), class 20 (8050/58), class 31 (5550/51/71/73/83, 5690, 5801), class 47 (1512/38/49/59/61/65/76, 1660, 1786/87, 1833/62/64/68/70/98).
    Cleethorpes
    Class 37 (6753/54)

Of note is the diversity of 350hp diesel shunters found at Immingham with examples of class 08, 10 and 11 being present, although the days were numbered for the class 10 and 11 locomotives. Locomotives of note were 12125 and 12135 which had been withdrawn the previous month in June 1969 and would be broken up within a few weeks of this visit during September 1969. 3613/14/19 had all been withdrawn in February 1969 and 3618 had been withdrawn in April 1969, all bar 3614 were sold to the National Coal Board for use at Moor Green colliery, the unfortunate 3614 being broken up within days of this visit during August 1969.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome

On this day in History - Grantham – 1st August 1973

A mid week summers day (Wednesday) spent sitting on Grantham station watching the traffic.

    Class 08 (3074), class 25 (5190), class 31 (5698), class 40 (258), class 46 (170/92), class 47 (1101/03/04/06/08/09, 1510/14/25/32/41/42/45, 1620/91, 1778/79, 1869, 1970/88), class 55 (9001/02/04/05/07/08/10/11/12/13/14/16/17/18/19/20/21).

On this day I saw seventeen out of twenty two Deltics in service, this representing an availability of at least 77%. Of the five not seen this day 9000/03/09 were in Doncaster works undergoing classified repair (Intermediate/Light/Intermediate respectively), 9006 was making its way from Edinburgh to Doncaster works (which it entered the following day) for an unclassified repair (No.1 power unit change) and 9015 was spare or on exam at Finsbury Park.

Also of note is the fact that at this point in time Grantham still had the requirement for a class 08 pilot engine (3074) out-stationed from Lincoln (40A). 3074 still exists as 08060 on the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway.

A number of the above were photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome
