The beauty of a P2 is that it can only ever be one colour (thus rendering such discussions moot) unless you're going to get into the realms of "neverwazzas"...

Very impressive. Here's hoping it all works as planned.

Well, yeah. Apple Green all the way for me. Which in the case of the P2 is the only option, happily.

EDIT: or did they wear wartime black?

The first two P2s were rebuilt into A4-style machines in 1936/37, the last four were built as such so no, they never saw black livery in the style that 2007 will be.

I had the privilege to visit the works a number of years ago. I was very impressed with the CAD drawings of the cylinder block that David showed me, and the amount of engineering excellence that went into producing them.

Now that the block actually exists, my admiration for the team has grown. The cylinders alone are a magnificent achievement - but there is already a superb rolling chassis for it to be bolted to.

What a visionary and well managed project the P2 is.

Ye God's..being an engineer I take my hat off to these folk. The depth of knowledge/research of this part of the project is fascinating.

The next interesting bit is going to be the valve gear.

Well I would have thought the cam box might be easier to master than the "black pudding"..(the cylinder block). Although, I'm probably wrong, as usual. I particularly like the idea of the cartridge assembly. Having a vested interest in this project where would be the best place/time to ask questions? I have, unfortunately been unable to make any visits to Darlington for some time.

That was a really good explanation of how it all fits together - thanks for linking to that!

The restoration/overhaul of 231E41 has recently involved the stripping down of the poppet valves and cams. Though this engine has oscillating cam drive rather than the rotating drive to be fitted to the Franklin/Lentz of the P2 the components involved might be of interest to some.

Arguably, as it's a new locomotive, it should be painted in the last specified colour for an express passenger steam loco...

Issued by which authority? The last steam loco passenger livery issued by BR resulted in the Rheidol Tanks being dipped in woad.

I actually think Porterbrook Purple would look marginally less dreadful on 2007 than, say, 2999 .... but suspect there may just be those who wouldn't be unduly keen on it's application to anything anywhere other than on the Isle of Sodor. Ow!! .... Who threw that?

This one can't - only Great Northern was painted GER blue and that was a rebuild of an A1/A10 Pacific.

As a founder member I do not want to see it ever be rebuilt in that way! The P2 Trust has likely ironed out all of the bugs. It will be quite the sight I am sure.
