Fair enough. How about "Samson"? That would go with "Goliath" as both were Biblical characters known for their strength. Ideal (if they MUST have names) for GWR 2-8-0Ts with similar attributes! \:D/

Not samson, thats the name we have on the 08, but good thinking.

Currently 4277 is in the main churston shed being worked on, theres a few little things that arent quite right etc and a few things that we have on engines here that arent standard (not nameplates! ha) but things like ash pan sprinklers etc... whilst this is going on there people rubbing her down too.

OK, I give up. I guess I'll have to wait to find out like everyone else! Not that I'm in any way interested, you understand. I'd much rather it entered service unnamed. [-o<

What's to stop them re using the name Trojan though? After all, one of their Auto trailers used to be called Claire. Now that it's left the railway, the name Claire has re appeared on a MK1.

My my my, although I'm not personally convinced that it will be Delilah, perhaps it will be Odysseus.
Or even Argos (in green and blue and be paid for the advertising)

Or even Elhanan as this also goes with Goliath.

    Still wrong!!
I would like to apologise that we are naming this engine. It does make a lot of the staff hurt inside, as do the funny liveries and dodgy coach names, but the passengers pay all out wages, and the passengers all (bar 0.0001%) call the engines by their names! Sorry.

4277 is almost fully rubbed down now, we've just got a few more days of it to go then a little bit of paint to slop round!!

I don't see anything wrong with locomotives being named or in new liveries. They are still in service and so it just a new livery. If the locomotives were just museum pieces then be authentic and don't name them, but these locomotives are still working, was there a problem when locomotives during the 1920/30s went into new liveries? Its just a fallacy that just because they weren't named in the past that they shouldn't be know.

My choice of Delilah was just a man's reaction to the manly biblical names being quoted.

However, if you have read the posts carefully there maybe, and I am not in the know, a clue to be seem.

Don't beat yourself up over the names. We all know its not your choice from previous comments. What is a credit to you and the other chaps though is the condition of the locos. For example: 7827 looked absolutely superb yesterday. Immaculate, Gleaming, light grey exhaust - well presented and well fired/driven! And as for names on non-namers: at the end of the day, personally speaking. I'm looking at stuff like the motion - so its quite easy to ignore a nameplate!
Its just good to have someone in the know on here. for many years lots of people had no idea what went on on the P&DSR.

Ok, so the locos are apparently named to please the paying (non-enthusiast) public, but I don't really see how huge chunks of revenue are created by lining locos out and giving them silly names? Perhaps I'm just being shortsighted, but every other preserved railway around the UK seems to manage quite well to satisfy the paying public with their more authentic looking locos - why do the P&DR feel the need to take loco/train liveries into the realms of fantasy to do the same?

4247 on the B&WR looked very smart last week when I passed it at Bodmin on a mainline train, and looked to have what was a decent sized gaggle of people stood next to it on the platform oggling at it. Are they really that less interested because 4247 doesn't have a name and doesn't look quite as 'pretty' as the 2-8-0Ts on the P&DR?

I's just like to echo Stu's comments that it is great to be able to discuss the goings on at the railway with someone in the know, and that I find tuffer5552's contributions on here particularly valuable.
