I've just updated my site with some P&DR pics from July, starring 7827 and 4277.

You've taken some super shots there Tim. Thanks for sharing.
Like the last one - 7827 with drain cocks open.
Know what you mean about the weather. It has been appalling all day here. the only consolation is that you get some good entertainment from 7827 in this weather. She was slipping her way up to Churston throughout the day - great fun!!

Some great shots there you've also got a few of the classic ones, i.e the shots through saltern and departing Goodrington.

Your quite right Stu. I was on holiday at Waterside the past week and on Saturday we waited for the 1st train to pass before we went off site, and 7827 was slipping all the way past. I noticed last Tuesday and Thursday morning she was doing it aswell. Videos will be going on YouTube soon - I got loads of 5239 and 7827 in lots of different locations around the holiday camp and a few at Goodrington Sands and Broadsands Viaduct (where I filmed the final 2 trains to Paignton on Saturday)

This business of 7827 slipping intrigues me. I was on the line in July, on a rainy day, and the loco had 7 coaches on and was slipping all the way on the banks. I liken a Manor to a small wheeled Black 5 and from my experience on the NYMR I wouldn't expect a Black 5 to have any problems with such a load, even on a wet rail. I wonder if the wheel tyres need re-profiling, even though they may still be within tolerance? The Schools on the NYMR was very light on its feet until the tyres were turned and this transformed it. Just a thought.

Where would the enjoyment be then, I prefer seeing her slip a little bit adds to the enjoyment I think.

Interesting. Not sure how long a loco should go from a major overhaul before tyres need turning. 7827 has been back from major for what...4 years?
Also, on the slipping. I know one of the drivers doesn't use sand - preferring to do battle with regulator and reverser, so even the drivers enjoy the challenge.
    If tyre turning doesn't work, they could try L D Porta's adhesion improvement methods: http://www.martynbane.co.uk/modernsteam ... hesion.htm

No Ihavn't got any experience in driving (Exept in train sim which doesn't count, fun getting the WSR manor up the bank in the snow though) but it does look and sound more entertaining when they are working hard, even when they do slip a little bit.
I also presume like everything every driver has their preference, and he must know whats he's doing if he gets away with it seven days a week. It may also make his job more interesting and challenging?? :-k :-k

I think without checking Lydham was returned to traffic in July 2005 so only just over three years, does seem longer though eh!

I think the practical point being made is that slipping is a sign of weakness or fault somewhere in the interaction between rail and wheel - either driving, wheels, track (including railhead conditions) or loading.
At a serious level slipping also affects the wheel-rail interface with a number of possible outcomes:
    1. heating of tyres - this can lead to the tyres slipping on the wheel, a potentially serious fault that requires scrapping of tyres due to risk of derailment.
    2. damage to tyres - due to increased wear, associated with 1.
    3. damage to track - resulting from prolonged or frequent slipping. Again though rare any resulting rail fracture can cause derailment.
    4. potential loss of control - the example to cite here would be Blue Peter.

Hope this explains the railwayman's aversion to slipping!

Looks like Saturday 30th August 2008 could be an interesting day, as not only are they operating there peak service due to Dartmouth Regatta but also Past-Time are running Bristol to Kingswear return with D1015.
Plus Vintage Trains Topped & Tailed by Class 47's from Tyseley Warwick Road to Kingswear and return.
    http://www.railtourinfo.co.uk/diesel.html
Question is I'm down for 9 days from the 27th August 2008 & was going to the Regatta on the 30th August 2008 to see the Red Arrows plus the Fireworks !

Think I might be better off looking to see what they do with the specials & taking pix ! :-k

If the weather stays like it has been here for the past month, then you will certainly be better of photting! The Arrows need good weather for the Dartmouth show, due to the complexities of the terrain. Cloud base higher than 4500ft for the full display I think.

the P&DSR guys will be busy that day!!

Lydham came out on test light engine on 21 June and then again on 29 June 2005.
On 30 June she double-headed the trains during the morning and also on the 1415 down service with Pannier 6435.

She then took over the sole diagram from Tuesday 5 July to Friday 22 July, so 5 July was really her first day back.

    Hope that helps
    Steve

Looks like tomorrow (Thursday) 5239 & 4277 will be on the service trains, 4277 taken over from 7827 which was running today when we arrived.
Would think they are using 5239 & 4277 due to the Dartmouth Regatta & expecting heavy loadings over the next 3 days !

Also I've just posted my photos of the Torbay Expresses on my pic site, hope you enjoy them
