A slightly misleading title since it implies Steam Railway and Steam River Boats. Calling it the 'Dartmouth River Boat and Steam Railway Company' would avoid confusion.

Sometimes confusion of this kind is intended. They call it marketing.

Seems to me they have forgotten something !
Like the Railway doesn't go to Dartmouth, it only has a Station or a Cafe as it is now, or are they going to do what Brunel couldn't !
Myself personally I don't like the new format, lets hope they don't start painting the stock like behind the that strange loco on the viaduct
on the front page, is the loco a rebuilt 7827 !
Thought that they were coming around over the last couple of years to be more of an enthusiast railway , But no I was wrong again !

But the riverboat goes to Dartmouth, so the name is now more correct.

On their website "History" page they specifically that say the DVR, now South Devon Railway, was hived off as a separate company to cater to the enthusiast market. So why not go there instead?
When you've got one of British premier holiday destinations - Torbay - at one end of your line, tourists would seem to be the obvious market to serve.

Technically that isn't correct though as The PDSR retaind the Dart Valley Railway Title and they are still or were still operating as the Dart Valley Railway / Dart Rail as as I understand the owning company of the Dartmouth river rail etc is still the Dart Valley Railway.

The South Devon Railway was bought by the Dumbleton Hall Preservation Society, or what was.

However the South Devon Railway has recently after many hard years work aquired the lease for the line for a ceremonial £1
See here http://www.sdronline.org.uk/Latest-News.php its near the bottom of the page

Also Tourists are only the obvious market if you makeenough of a profit from them to keep the line going and for all the works that need doing.
It would also be interesting to note how many of these said tourists are actually enthusiasts that visit the line regularly as I can think of at least 20 people who I see down the line regularly and recognise??

Sounds like a case for an on-train/-platform survey of passengers' leisure interests and reason for travelling that day. But I suppose the P&D have already done that, otherwise they wouldn't make such a distinction between enthusiasts and tourists on their website.
I'm sure that the P&D are delighted to see enthusiasts buying tickets on their trains. But they seem to be convinced that their bread and butter income comes from Joe Public.

    hi james,

7827 will be starting the season. 5239 will be on standby, with 4277 re-joining the fleet from mid april after her annual boiler exam.

75014's boiler is currently at crewe for overhaul, this should be back with us in a couple off years. The Tender is almost ready for painting after recieving remedial work to the brake system and some patching in the bunker. The wheel sets will be be removed from the loco this year, hopefully by the summer to be sent away for turning. Work will then centre around the frames and the overhaul off all the remaining various items in readniess for the return off the boiler. Then it's just a case off putting it all back together!

Yes, no offers as yet for 4588, so this will remain in store at Churston, with 4555 being stored at paignton.

I hope you find this info useful, i intend to keep a thread updated regarding 75014's overhaul.

Don't think there will be many on here that will disagree with that comment !

Plus why have they moved the gates back at the front of the station at Paignton, then put bollard where the gates were (Strange) ?

Do we know yet how 7827 is going to Didcot (ie) Road then rail in to Didcot or by rail all the way with diesel pilot for this ?

Wouldn't it need to be in steam to go by rail (lubrication)? not sure if it is certified to be in light steam on NR?

Perhaps someone from the railway might answer the question if or can be certified to be in light steam on NR !

7827 Will be going by road to didcot. stu you are correct, she would have to be in steam to provide the lubrication to the valves's and cylinders. i'm not 100% sure on the legalities off her going on the mainline though. i'll leave that to someone else to elaborate on.

I think there has been an offer for 4588 but the offer did not meet the expectation of the vendors.

I did hear that they wanted what was thought a rather high price for her considering condition and requirements but I suppose the true value is in the eye of the buyer!!
