    Please could you tell me what is happening with the three austerity locos? I understand that Warrington/68013 is having firebox repairs and that Sapper has been hired from Steve Latham to work the santas. What has happened to Lord Phil therefore?

    Thanks

    How many steam locomotives are at Peak Rail right now? Off the top of my head there's 68013, Zebedee, Lord Phil, Sapper, 3192 and Castlefield? What is Castlefield?

    Castlefield is an 0-6-0 Hudswell/Clarke Diesel Hydraulic loco, not a steam loco.

    There are 34 ex-BR diesels (many owned by the Heritage Shunters Trust) and 10 industrial diesels. (Information from the 2011 edition of "Railways Restored", which only lists three steam locos: 68006, Royal Pioneer and Zebedee, all 0-6-0 ST.)

    Zebedee is a side tank, not a saddle tank.

    Thanks - obviously a slip in 'Railways Restored' or the information they were given.

    How long does Royal Pioneer have left before overhaul? Any news on 68006 and Zebedee, also Lord Phil is on only a lease if I remember correctly?

    68006 is Royal Pioneer / Warrington. 68012 (Duke) is now based at Ecclesbourne Valley Railway where an overhaul has just started. Zebedees overhaul is mainly done by volunteers I think, hence the long turn around for this loco.

    Peak Rail have:-

    68013 (ex Royal Pioneer/ Warrington) currently receiving firebox repairs from Steve Latham. The boiler certificate expires supposedly in 2013 but this is the fourth time the boiler has been out in four years and the inspector has seen it each time, so who's to say when it really does expire? The engine had a new inner firebox fitted in 2001/2002.

    RSH 0-6-0T Zebedee undergoing overhaul, the full time loco engineer is also working on this not just volunteers.

    Sapper owned by Steve Latham on loan whilst 68013 is repaired.

    HE3888 ex Smithywood coking plant is down the side of the Heritage Shunters group shed. I understand that it is nominally for sale or available if a sensible restore/run offer is made for it from a group who know what they are doing.

    Lord Phil HE3883 (ex Glasshoughton No.6) is privately owned and is on a seven year loan agreement to the railway.

    So normally there are two working locos at the moment.

    Used to go up to Smithywood in the early 70's and blag our way in to see the two locos there - had some good footplate rides, but by eck they were run down! Got a few crappy photos somewhere too.

    You are right there. The loco now at Rowsley that belongs to the Heritage Shunters Group was running with most of the leaves missing on its middle drivers when I last went to Smithywood in 1982. It had various ailments including worn axleboxes and big ends. The other austerity that they had there had fallen on its side after running away down the yard.

    David and myself braved snow ,sleet and cold (no not rain for a change) to finish the signal wires at Riverside.

    not much else to report this week as we concentrated up Riverside, an interesting link below to do with Haddon tunnel and the continuation of the Monsal Trail, see the pdf download in blue first paragraph in;
