There is some "expert" on WNXX who claims that he is an professional image expert, has determined it was a blowback and that a report has been sent to the RAIB

Well all this internet chatter seems to have attracted the local press.

    http://www.exeterexpressandecho.co....sing-Dawlish/story-22932188-detail/story.html

Not the best informed piece of investigative journalism I've seen!

Similar scenes have been recorded on video before.

I think on balance I'll side with the trick of the light side of the argument because a: it's probably the right answer and b: if we keep going down this particular road we'll probably end up getting mainline steam banned. It was all so much easier in the old days before the internet gave a platform for anyone to pontificate on any subject they wish to even if they have little or no knowledge or understanding of it.

Anyone with half a brain can see that's a light based reflection..flames that big would have left huge burn marks let alone killing the driver, fireman and inspector...

    What a load of nonsense..

Daily (Doom) Mail today as well

In very low light the glare of the fire as it reflects on swirling steam is going to stand out as it did in the footage

And that is despite quotes from here from sources close to the fact.

That applies to a few things you read on this Forum but fortunately NP is also full of experts and so most times you get sense eventually....but I did say most times! ;)

Yes, and I think you will find that those of us who maybe have a little bit more knowledge on one aspect of our hobby than others, try and make sure we always post accurately on "our" subject. And that's not just a question of retaining credibility it's very much a case of respecting the others here and not feeding them with false information.

Indeed. You only have to observe steam working at night to see how the exhaust is periodically illuminated when the fire hole door is opened.

I think even Mr Varser of York would struggle with a ban for an incident that didn't happen!.

Yes very true, if you don't believe what Andy said well then you really don't know a lot, you see I know who Andy is, and believe him more than an armchair person who sees a video and speculates what happened I also know that glare and bright lights can give photography a false look in the dark especially when the object is moving, if you don't know who Andy is, then I suggest you do some research and find out!

It is far better to keep quiet and let people think you are an idiot, than to open your mouth and dispel all doubt.

Not in your case though....but this is NP and it's more fun watching the idiots making fools of themselves.
