It depends what you are trying to achieve, for most it’s recreating something they remember from their youth or something they wish they had witnessed. I’m in the former group, the trouble is we are all old gits now! Whatever the reason a BR liveried loco on a set of Mk1s on the 21st century railway is not perfect but it’s as good as it gets. I think it’s the same for passengers, I wouldn’t book on a tour if the coaching stock consisted of sealed coffins.

Photography is a hobby of mine Nathan, and it's my choice as to who, what, where or when I take photographs, I take them for MY pleasure and I'm sorry if you don't like my choices but that's life!
However if you want to go out and photograph that hideous rake of coaches for posterity then fill your boots that's your choice, but as they say on Dragons Den........."I'm out".

Just so and given that this is the RTC thread my guess is that the RTC would prefer Mk1s for all the obvious reasons. They would probably have also preferred their rolling stock provider to have seen the obvious about what was coming in stock renovation and adaptation to keep the Mk1s operational and 'street legal'. But all businesses are entitled to do what they choose and make their own mistakes, if that's the way some people view it. At least LSL made the right call but look at the price we now have to pay for the privilege.

I'm a bit confused, but matron says not to worry, I'm sure that earlier you said that you weren't heading out (something about saving petrol) yet here you end up saying, "I'm out,"? And what's all that about a Chinese restaurant, Dragon's Den? Is that where you're going for lunch to fill your boots? I don't know of one in the area but I did find one in Pudsey when a did a bit of a search on google - not saving much petrol there! Is it google or googly? All this talk of googlies reminds me, in cricket, it's not the batsman's job to say, "I'm out!" You wait for the umpire's finger to go up . . . or is it the doctor's? It's so confusing, they both wear white coats . . . but one of them wears a rubber glove and can't be trusted . . . but which one is which? "MATRON!"

No idea how many would have got on at the Cross this morning, but certainly a trip about the journey rather than the destination. 7 hours to get 90 minutes at your destination, and of course another 7 hours back. Hope those chip shop restaurants were not too busy when they all tried to get lunch at the same time.
Still I am sure @60044 will tell me that Kings Cross, Stevenage, Huntingdon, Peterborough and York are all just park and ride locations for Whitby;)

Yarm, Long Easby, Danby (Diesel), Danby, and finally Picton for todays shots.

Thanks to a very obliging WCR/Riley crew for working the train over the viaduct at Yarm as they normally coast there, and also for the exhaust at Danby.

I'm in the second group as I was still primary school age when 35030 rolled into Waterloo on 9th July 1967. I guess my objective as a photographer is to try to recreate the steam era as best I can. Having been taught how to do my own black & white developing & printing when I was at boarding school, I still enjoy using a film camera, which I guess you might regard as a further attempt to "recreate" the steam era as most (although not all) photographers were still using B&W in the 1960s.

I think there will inevitably be an element of compromise and the point at which one draws the line will vary from individual to individual. On some heritage railways, you can take pictures which really could be from the 1960s or earlier - take W24 hauling a train of pre-grouping compartment coaches on the IOWSR, for example. By and large however, on most heritage lines, even if you can avoid bringing modern buildings into the picture, a nit-picker/rivet-counter would probably find something that wasn't authentic. Take 30053 on the Swanage Railway - right loco, right line, but how often did M7s work five Mark 1s along the branch? A Maunsell two-coach push-pull set was the norm. Furthermore, my favourite picture of 30053 has it chimney-first towrds Swanage whereas in BR days M7s almost always ran facing Wareham

When you come to the main line, challenges to recreate the steam era get even harder - post-1968 catenary (e.g. WCML north of Crewe, ECML), lineside vegatation, modern buildings (including modern stations), modern signalling, modern fencing and the removal of lineside telegraph poles to name just a few. Far fewer trains ran with headboards - even the Bournemouth Belle often ran headboard-less and, of course, in the final years of steam, there was a pronounced lack of engine cleaners at some sheds resulting in filthy locos.

I basically aim to photograph trains which "look right" - i.e., no mismatch between the liveries of the loco and the stock, evan if the loco in question my never have operated over the line in question. Essentially, it's each ot his own, but the main thing is the enjoyment of it - after all, when we were youngsters, who would have thought we would have so many heritage railways or that steam would still be permitted on the main line over 55 years since the 15 Guinea Special?

Im kinda a bit lost here, not at all sure what this has to do with me :(
But if we are talking about Photography I used to be quite a keen photographer back when I was younger, 35mm and medium format, I even had my own dark room set up to develop and print my own pictures, obviously going digital changed a lot of it, I had a lot of good stuff from the early days of when steam returned to the Southern, and then the first evening run of Taw Valley, But an mistake when I moved home, meant I lost all my transparencies when someone mistook by camera gear boxes full of old negatives, dark room materials, for rubbish when My Dad, cleared out the garage, and did a dump run I lost a very expensive set of lenses, and my medium format camera , to the council dump.

My canal boating mainly took place from the late 50s to the mid 70s when the canals were quiet, today they are far to busy for a leisurely holiday, the Greek Yacht only appeared about 12 years ago. :)
