Looking at the timings on RTT it has only 8 minutes at Bushey. that is not very long for anything let alone a water stop. Then again it only has 10 minutes at Rugby. I'm surprised Birmingham International isn't being used as it has 14 minutes and can access P1 in the up direction. Either way I will be just north of Kidder for the shot.

I think the prob with plat 1 at International now is it's usually where the 158 bound for the Cambrian Coast lays over.

A lot of the Steam Dreams December trips now state Black 5 as rostered loco so it looks like 34067 will not been ready. I expect the RTC trips 34067 was due to haul will be either 44932 or one Riley's

It's surprising that there hasn't been more work lined up for Braunton or the two "Brits" after 9th November. Admittedly, several RTC trips are still down for haulage by Tangmere on the UK steam website, and perhaps these workings may go over to 34046, 70000 or 70013 if 34067 isn't ready in time. Superb engines as Black Fives are, they are limited to 60mph, and some of the SD trips, such as the Sherborne run on 16th December or the Bath trip on 5th December will be harder to path without a 75mph loco at the front. On the Brighton main line, the single track Salisbury-Yeovil line or the Portsmouth Direct, you need an engine that can get a move on.

I agree with the analysis. The other point is that these trains tend to load up to 12 ish and that will also cramp the style of a Black 5 in getting a train away. As for Tangmere. Given the picture seen of her recently, it looks like it'll be 2014 before she is doing anything again.

It's winter, crews need a break, days are short and passengers like a decent amount of the running in daylight, and most loco owners use the period for routine maintenance.

2 of the Steam Dreams trips - Horsham to Ely and Ipswich to Winchester - which now state double headed black fives previously had 70000 listed as the rostered loco. Support crew availability? These cross London trips are very long days and a lot have been hauled by Tornado in the past.

The Bath trip goes via the Portsmouth direct line and week day paths for 75mph locos have been difficult in the past ( Bittern was diesel assited on one trip).
The Sherborne trip is via Haywards Heath and Eastleigh and Black 5's have been pathed for Three Bridges to Bath trips in the past.

I am more concerned that these trips list one black five when Steam Dreams trips are usually 13 coaches.

Let's see what happens with the RTC trip around Kent on Nov 11 when a Black 5 is rostered. That will probably be loaded to around 10 but if, as might be convenient, the minder tags along then I fear for the inevitable on the SD trips later.

Who said it's going to just be one engine for these trips? Two engines means a quicker get away and up to line speed more quickly and more power in reserve.

True but off the top of my head I can only think of two that routinely are doubleheaded 5's - the January CME (look at the load) and the Tin Bath (look at the route).

The Steam Dreams website shows 3 trips as double headed Black 5's at present but not the 2 discussed above.

I'd suggest January - March is the "quiet season" so to speak, as there is usually a flurry of tours from late November in the run up to Xmas.

Having trialled mine on the underground in January, I'd recommend purchasing a prime lens for these dark months if you don't wish to travel too far.

I believe the replacement of cracked thermic syphons has been done before; certainly a new set was manufactured for 34023 (or 34059) a while back. Its just a question of time, money and effort.

Further to above posts the SD Bath trip now states Double headed black 5's.
