My Uncle Tom - not sure if he had a cabin :) - always referred to them as Bradford. Mind you, he lived in Wibsey so he was posh. :D

    Both.

    61667 Bradford
    61668 Bradford City

Surprised Lincoln, Colchester and Ipswich weren't considered in preference to Liverpool and Everton.

I believe that Ipswich Town did not exist as a league club until after the locos were built.
    Edit; league side from 1938.

Good point. Colchester were even later.

Were Lincoln like Ipswich and even in the league in the 30's? Although I'm sure Ipswich have a replica nameplate above their tunnel, just like their rivals who had a genuine B17 named after them!

Just checked Wikipedia, and they have been in the league, on and off, since 1892. I didn't realise that they have lost their place in the Football League five times, in 1908, 1911, 1920, 1987 and 2011.

Actually to be fair some were allocated to Gorton but I wonder how many Mancunians think of B17s as home locos. Reading LNER Encyclopedia they seem to have been particularly popular with the Cambridge crews, hence my suggstion. Norwich City would be a good one too, especially as, after a year you could streamline it and rename it East Anglian, like the original

I have to admit, I'm not hugely keen on the Spirit of Sandringham name either. If it had been my project I would have chosen another East Anglian country house to honour. There are plenty they could have chosen, e.g. Felbrigg Hall, Ickworth, Angelsey Abbey, Oxburgh Hall...

But I know, I'm not a member of the project so it's not for me to say! :)

I have a framed limited edition print of 2863 Everton on my office wall, seen arriving at Liverpool Central with an ambulance train. EFC have the nameplate in prime position on the stairs leading to the corporate seats in the Goodison Road stand. Although I have donated to the Sandringham project, I expect its completion to take many years to materialise.

I used to know the owner of the other 'Everton' nameplate. He bought it from Doncaster works for £4.

Not sure if any of those would have had much pull with the wider general public. I think Spirit of Sandringham also has the benefit of a perceived royal connection...

I have a theory that the Footballer class was "kicked off" based on the 1936 FA Cup. The semi finalists Arsenal, Sheffield United and Grimsby Town being joined in the initial four locomotives by Derby County, who were beaten in the quarters by Fulham (the latter not being on the LNER network).

As I say, it's just a theory and I have nothing to back it up, but it would be interesting to hear if anyone has any historical evidence to support or quash it.

My hometown club...only founded in 1937 (which I knew), not in the league until 1950 (which I didn't). Probably still best known for beating Leeds in the 1970s.

I agree. I must admit to a purely personal desire to see a recreated B17 temporarily renamed "Blickling" in LNER livery posed alongside our own GWR No 2807 in Toddington Yard one day!
