    Apologies. First is West Brompton, second is Folkestone West and third is Tonbridge.

    Neither was I and was very annoyed to have missed what is now rare steam in the SE. The first indication I have seen was last night when I came across a short video on YT of it standing at Clapham Junction. However, I would have been further vexed if it had actually gone via Redhill, which is down the road from me!

    Come on lads, keep up ;)
    Railway Herald :: Railtours

    What you guys need is a day when it's raining so that you can spend time updating your diaries. What's the chance of that happening? :)<BJ>

    Indeed, but the link you've sent only has 3 April onwards, so I can't see whether it was there - presumably, given your comment, it was. I do check it regularly, but didn't see it listed. I must admit I pay a little less attention to it than before as it has lost the timings links and is generally seemingly updated less, but it's still a marker for what may be happening. The other site - 'Railtoursinfo' also lacks accuracy and has omissions, but I see now that the run WAS on there! Oh well, we are still infinitely better off today than in decades past when it was all 'word of mouth'.

    I would actually argue the opposite. I think the proliferation of railtour timing websites has caused spotting to "lose the magic", so to speak. The sheer joy of turning up for a few hours at a station and not knowing what you'll see coming through or when. There was a certain mystique about it. Nowadays, where we can track trains to the minute and know the route and traction days in advance, spotting has become less spontaneous and has lost a lot of charm.

    True, but whereas in the old days there was always something of interest to watch while waiting for the main event, the modern railway scene is totally boring. I have no interest in freight services in my area as 99% of them are hauled by class 66s. If a passenger service passes it will be a 165 or 800 unit. I am very grateful for the likes of Realtimetrains and Railway Herald for my information as it means I don't have to waste my time at the lineside. Just my humble opinion. [BJ]

    There wasn't a lot of magic standing on the hillside at Ais Gill in horizontal rain waiting and not knowing, then for the train to eventually come into sight with a diesel on the front. :(

    There are, of course, many views, but, with the relatively boring modern scene, knowing when something of interest might appear is a huge time-saver. Still nothing to stop anyone turning up at random and seeing what appears, of course (as I used to do in the 1970s!).

    Yesterday evening I went out to Overton, just north of York to attempt a shot of Gresley through the catenary and here is the result mini_IMG_0856 copy.jpg

    Back in 1975 I tried the same shot with the same loco - no sun that day but at least there was no "knitting" to contend with back then IMG_0856x.jpg

    Going into a livery debate, (sorry!:)) 60007 in its current form does look rather nice with the Saphos stock, however I will say as 4498 the blue and grey stock behind the tender does seem to compliment the Garter Blur it wore in your 1975 photo Peter, thanks for sharing.
