I didn't believe Linesider's suggestion that the general public would see nothing amiss with the video. So I tried it on one or two and, guess what, he's right! I guess we're all used to having people up our exhaust pipe on motorways so I imagine the same folk think it'd be ok to do the same on the railway.

There have been some on WNXX commenting on the drivers skill at being able to run that close, until it was pointed out that NR would never allow this to happen.

"It is impossible to overestimate the ignorance and stupidity of the average person." Discuss!

Didn't Einstein say "Only two things are infinite, the universe and the stupidity of mankind, though I am not 100% sure about the universe"

Ignorance yes, simply because they don't appreciate the finer points of railway operation, so not really fair to bracket ignorance with stupidity in this instance.

I prefer the 'Einsten' attributed quote on my mug mat: "I don't know, I don't care and it doesn't make any difference"

To be fair, that video took in one or two people on this forum, who really should have known better! Hard to accuse a general member of the public who may have precisely zero interest in railway operations with stupidity, when even people on here with a keen, possibly professional, interest in the subject were suckered by it!

Does raise an interesting serious point though - if it was that easy to produce a (humorous) video that was totally "wrong" with regards the rules, yet fooled many people, then presumably it would be relatively easy for someone of malicious bent to do a more subtle example, implying a breach of rules or unsafe working when none occurred. It is always worth having a slight scepticism when viewing anything on YouTube, Flickr etc.

YouTube is full of stuff that never happens but attracts revenue for the poster because of the number of hits and the links made by Google to adverts. It's business. By contrast - this is genuine, she loaded it on an impulse and then couldn't believe what happened. A strange world.

(500 points for guessing the south London location. 5 if you turn the sound on. PM me for the answer).

I couldn't remember the exact quote but it is:

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity. Martin Luther King

I should add that before the Ranger thread, I had been reading some of the stuff in General Chat and was a trifle disenchanted.

Indeed, though the first can sometimes lead to the the latter of course ?
