Come on Sheff, give him a break. He's clearly stated that when he has twenty big ones he'll approach the owner to see if he is interested in a sale ...

(... of course, having stated his willingness to pay that figure, and approaching said owner with the funding in place, who knows - maybe the price will magically go up a bit )

I think he's in the clear, as he states that the appeal is to raise money to try to purchase the unit. Whether (PS Stuart, a "wether" is a castrated ram) there's any credibility to the figures to either the £20k threshold for a bid, or the £35k target, I can't tell because he doesn't sayanything about how the numbers have been calculated.

Now, whether @stuartreeder is ethically right to try to raise funds in this way without any indication of what would happen to any money raised if a bid was unsuccessful, or if too much was raised, is another question entirely. It would also be useful to know where the money is going to go - at present, there is nothing on the page (not even a link to a F******k page) that could give me confidence that the money won't just go into his current account. If I thought that anyone was going to be rash enough to sign up, I might try to report it to JustGiving. As I believe in caveat emptor, and that anyone who is mug enough to stump up deserves to lose their money, I haven't. I just hope for his and anyone else's sake that he can account for everything properly, because otherwise he's putting himself in grave danger of a chat with the local fraud squad.

This has been the same situation with all of Stuart's 'projects' - there is no company, constitution or legal setup so no-one knows where the money will go

It's Ok then the project is bound to be a success now especially given the projects founders history of delivering results against the odds :Saywhat:

In all seriousness though it's a shame, as I've said before Stuart is obviously really keen, that could be put to good use on an established project somewhere and I am sure he would find it a positive experience (along with a steep learning curve when the realisation hits of how much of a gigantic undertaking these type of things actually are).

An interesting twist, the page is now "sponsored" on Facebook - meaning somebody is paying to promote it in order to get more likes...

  10. Here's a question... It's said that if you have enough monkeys with enough typewriters then they will, at some point, produce the complete works of Shakespeare.

So... does this mean that if you gathered all the frothers, fruitcakes and dreamers together (this Stuart character, Alfred Roberts, the Mutton guy, the BDLPG, Mr Meon Valley, the Folkestone Harbour branch lot and no doubt many, many more that are out there), then they would eventually produce...

... an order for a pot of T&R Williamson's railway vehicle paint?

Or would all the 'grand fromages' never agree on which colour it should be?

They'd produce nothing, because they'd fall out over who was going to be in charge...

Hu used to be active on the old Heritage Railways Yahoo group some years back. Had rather a narrow view of preservation. Used to be at the East Kent IIRC.

is their a problem with me sponsoring my group to raise likes views etc, if the bid is unsuccessful we would raise the bid and if still unsuccessful we would return all money that's a promise, we have people interested who has serviced the 3cigs and driven the units as well , interested in the group.

steam loco 1466 group had no experience and they were teenagers and they got the loco in the end didn't they

I was severely taken to task and insulted three years ago when the 'teen-newbuild-facebook' (TNF's) brigade launched themselves in to the realms of the heritage movement for daring to suggest that times have moved on since 1466 was saved by teenagers.

The big, bad, corporate, elfin safety, paper pushing, box ticking, consultant wielding system is not the place for novices. You need real plans, real skills and most of all real money to make progress.

Meanwhile I am still waiting to see actual progress on any TNF project..

Well your not sponsoring your group because there's 0 in the pot. Also your saying that if you don't get the unit your just going to give up, setting yourself up to fail in the first place.

Well since no-one knows your contact details it would be hard for anyone to make you keep that promise. Who's to say that you wouldn't just disappear with any donated money? If you haven't got the guts to donate to your own project then how can you seriously ask other people to give you £35k???? There are soooooo many reasons why this project is doomed, but you never listen so it would be pointless trying to debate them with you.
