Re: Scarborough Spa Express 2010 Footage

Have heard that Leander failed this morning so won't be on todays SSC. 46115 is in steam at Carnforth but there is some doubt it can be pathed to get over to York to do this evenings circular around Wakefield, Castleford etc. 46115 is booked to do the trains next week commencing 17th Aug.

46115 dispatched from Carnforth, this morning; all being well, will be on the afternoon SSE.

Spare a thought for the support crew, if you see them!

Thanks for posting this. It's always good to get the 'real info' from operators :)

Spoke to some of the support crew last night back at York, they seemed pleased with the way things were going.

I'll update my previous - we managed to effect a loco change at Milford Sdgs, so the outward SSE actually arrived at Scarborough, steam-hauled. A positive attitude and excellent co-operation from NR Control works wonders!

I might add, inter alia, that this season's revised route, via Wakefield (as discussede on another thread), does, indeed, appear to be paying off.

A big dissapointment waiting at Kirkgate and a box arrived, where's the steam engine passingers asking each other. We had a look round Wakefield and came home better luck next week...... we hadn't booked.

Hard to know how WCRC can let potential passengers know about last minute changes like this, short of ringing each station announcer and asking him/her to make a special announcement? I guess that if you'd known 46115 was being "scrambled", even if you didn't know when it would take over with the tour, you'd have joined the train?

I think we would have joined if we knew it was steam from Milford. As I saw it it was a box hauled tour for the day. No announcements over the station tannoy only late running of timetabled trains, points failure, disturbance on the line etc ! nothing to do with the Spa Express.
As I say better luck next week will try again ! credit to WCRC for getting Scots Guardsman over at short notice.

Perhaps some members of this forum who seem to take great delight in knocking WCRC would now like to eat just a little humble pie, and praise them for their efforts in getting the replacement loco to the SSE so quickly.

Thanks James, much appreciated. Top marks to all concerned. I echo Ralphs remarks. I spoke to your man at Kirkgate this morning, a very pleasant fella.

Does anybody know what the problem is with Leander? I was looking forward to seeing it working, it's a handsome bit of kit.

Of course, any failure is a disappointment but, given that 5690 was only failed this morning, I don't think there is much else that could have been done (and please don't start the "why don't you have a stand-by" etc, etc - it just doesn't stack up). To be honest, I had my doubts as to whether we could actually achieve a change-over, at Milford, but we did and we are grateful for excellent co-operation all round.

If I felt that some comments posted on here (on this and other related threads) were in any way representative of the majority, I think one or two of us really would be thinking "why bother?". However, Nat-Pres is an enthusiasts' site (and, admittedly, a useful one, at that - otherwise I wouldn't bother reading or posting) and some will naturally will take a more extreme view - and we do know who the knockers and stirrers are!

We are nonetheless always grateful for the support of the majority!

WCRC did exceptionally in difficult circumstances and it's difficult to see how realistically they could of done any better than they did.

Some people should be thankfull it's a WCRC operation who have a pool of loco's, if it was a DBS working it would of been game over no doubt.

My dad went to York this morning for the tour, and when he found out it was diesel and steam would probably only work the return trip he decided to come home. He wasn't best pleased when I told him 46115 had been put on at Milford! Well done WCRC for managing to get that sorted in such a short space of time.

A good bit of co-operation there - well done to WCRC and NR :)

Hope 5690 is restored to full health soon.

    Regards,

    Dan

I think that this a tremendous effort by all to replace a steam locomotive with another within a day.
    Well done to all concerned!

I am looking forward to my trip to Scarborough next week :)
