Like I said a few posts back on this thread. I went over the top on my post about 925 going main line and I'm sorry for having a go at Martin.

Everone, please stop this, or do i have to ask the mods to bang heads together??, , the person involved has said sorry, Antony has clarified the situation from the owners point of view, so what else is their to be said, we all have our own opinions can we not leave it at that? just be happy that another engine from the NRM will have a working future . oh and 73129, lee is it? i accept your appology , but can i add that some times its better to think before you hit that post button but in saying that i could easily apply to all of us , me included

I could not agree more Martin we are ALL guilty of this sometimes, or as my Wife is fond of saying,"Press the send button and engage brain later", hmmm.

However do lets drop the subject now and return to our first love of trains?

    Regards
    Chris

Actually Kent Yeti, I can give you an example of a "sod off" attitude from Germany. I found out that during a recent stay of mine near Munich there would be a steam special from there to Nürnberg via Augsburg, behind 41 018 of the Dampflok-Gesellschaft München, but stabled at Bahnpark Augsburg who also organised the tour.
Sunday steam specials used to use the main line, going right through the village where I stay, but as this was undergoing extreme engineering work (two new tracks), I thought the diversion to the south through Fürstenfeldbruck might be taken.
So I rang up to ask, and was told that I could have a timetable if I paid half the price of the tour itself, and no they didn't give such info on the phone. Protests that I only wanted one short answer were ignored.
What do we learn from this? It's not wise to generalise about steam people being all sweetness and light in one country, and arrogant and anti in another. There's folks and there's folks everywhere.

Ooh you steam types are tetchy aren't you?
Anybody interested in Cheltenham on this forum or is it simply more fun to wind each other up ?

as of last week bBoth cylinders had been stripped of nasty and work is continuing on preparation for boiler lagging to come off.

Pictures will appear each week or so on Carl's website at http://carl-watson.fotopic.net/
I love the fact that it is being overhauled on the same road as a 66. What price that a few years ago ?

Great stuff, keep up the good work!

Who'd have thought it? A "Schools" being overhauled in Eastleigh Works in 2010? Real life is so much stranger than fiction!

I hope there will be more steam overhauls there in future. Its great that we now have an original works site doing what it was designed to do (regarding steam) in this day and age. Now to add a few unrestored 'Merchant Navys' and reintroduce the 'production line' overhaul system, and we have a sense of what the place must have been like durning the 1950-60s...

Once the lagging is off, will she have to have a boiler lift? at least it should be an easy job at eastleigh with overhead cranes etc.
is she as you expected, and out of interest, what other engines parts have you found stamped on componants as you strip her down? that got to be an interesting thing to look forward too, who knows,, is 925 really 925?

what i am refering too is , things like frame identifying marks, after all, isnt there a certain hall that can run under two identies?, for all we know, at a heavy in southern or br days she might have swopped frames, from which i believe a locos identity is taken? and actually Chris, the last bit about 925 being 925 well, it was said with humour in mind, everyone involved with loco preservation is used to seeing engines with componants from other engines fitted, it would be good to find out just what else has survived . and finally, please dont call me daft , its not my fault you cant tell a joke

All the numbers on the motion read "925". Yes the boiler is coming off in the shop, thanks to Knights Rail providing a crane driver and a working, certificated crane.

There is a semi-circular weld on the top of the smokebox indicating that the boiler was once on a "big chimney" school.

The number on the loco is the number painted on it, not the number stamped on the various bits and pieces! At the end of the day, it's all an accounting thing. You can number it what you like.

especially when you renumber 34105 into 34051 and fit Winston Churchill name plates, or when you fit tangmere plates too it, so what engine does it become then? sorry but i always thought an engines true identiy is taken from the number stamped on its frames because during overhaul, bits get swopped over and changed between locos but generally the frames dont get changed , unless someone wishes to correct me

Many of the first 400 or so Stanier Class 5 4-6-0s had their frames swopped during works visits.

Martin has made a valid point about 925 which to those of us involed in steam loco restoration does sometime turn up interesting little things as to what bits of what engine are fitted to a particular loco at the pressent time.
The Urie group can tell you what boiler was fitted to what loco during a particular time in its service and we have found motion parts off other locos that were put on during BR days. But as Chris has stated so far its pure 925.
Incidentally if you think about Tysleys Rood Ashton Hall that went to Barry Island as Albert Hall but as it was Rood Ashtons frames its morphed back to its former identity.
So no need to jump down his throat he made a valid comment.
    David
