08854 was cut up in 2012 at Kingsbury. Probably one of the most tour friendly shunters as I didn't have it then, but had twice since.

Thanks. Oh, that's a bit sad.

Remember, it had done virtually 5 miles to get to Bishops Lydeard and was VERY overheated on arrival.....

I gather that in the early WSR days the 14's could get all hot and bothered on the climbs

Got rescued once on the Severn Valley by an 08 when the GWR Manor slipped to a standstill

First ever visit to the KWVR in 1969 and 45212 derailed while running round. Haworth sent D0226 to haul our special. Not quite what I'd travelled for all the way from Peterborough on a 2-car DMU. :(

Does an 09 with a 4 tc on an Eastliegh Station to Eastliegh Works shuttle count?

And I was rescued by BH's 08 (which at the time was a little dodgy) after a visiting 37 had failed at Little Rock and the 08 was sent to rescue the set and loco. It was chucking out more stuff than a steam loco.

Not mainline but at one period in the early 90's 03069 was used on GWSR fairly regularly. Even ran double headed with Robert Nelson no.4 at a mixed traffic gala doing most of the work because someone had forgotten to order the coal in time (this was the opening weekend of the season) but that's another story although a rescue of sorts.....

Building on the original question then, I wonder what the record is for the furthest in distance a shunter has ever operated on a passenger train, mainline or preserved...?
