Yes, Robinson passed on the position as he said he was too old, and suggested Gresley.

There's an interesting table from the BR era here:

https://www.steamindex.com/jile/jile43.htm#pap520 from which the Coronations show up somewhat worse than other class 7 / 8 locos in mileage between repairs.

What is not covered there is the variation; i.e. the figures are average mileage between repairs, but not the variation.

The discussion of that paper is where Cook made his comment that, directly contradictory to Bond, that mileage was the best basis for selecting a loco for repair.

Is it just me, or does the LNER seem to attract more controversy than the other three?

"He [Whitelaw] represents the bygone feudal system of railway management when railway Directors regarded the General Manager much as they would their bailiff or gamekeeper." (Hamilton 1967, p.200 citing Allen)

Don't worry, west of Bristol they can start a fight with their own reflections.

Well yes, I was obliquely making the point that dates when a particular class happened to be withdrawn after say about 1958 had more to do with happenstance than anything else.

Amazing how many people forget that an A4 was simply an improved A3 with streamlining.
