I hope it's OK to post a diesel gala here. 4th to 6th November.

South Devon Railway generously put the roster on line. Yesterday was 5081, D7612 and D6501. Even a station dog!

    Attached are some photos.

Not bothered by firsts, just good to have a pure diesel gala and something different , with a lot of variety in the timetable, freights shunters etc,
Seemed quite a busy day yesterday , when I was jumping on and off of trains,
Sure it was a success for them,

South Devon organise great galas, with a lot of variety in motive power and kinds of train. The diesel gala was no exception; glad that I went.

Why ? Why should SDR get something in that sees everyday passenger service ? You want a 57 do an over night on them, simple don't need a mutated ex duff at a gala in place of a 24/26,
it won't make any money bringing a 57 in.

I thought it was a shame the 57 plan fell through at the 2015 gala. Of course if anyone wants to go for mileage etc behind them it's hardly difficult with the daily passenger service so there's no 'red pen' imperative, but the novelty value of seeing one on a country branch line was quite appealing to me at least. The original timetable for that event used the 57 pretty well - enough oddities to satisfy weirdoes like me (e.g. it hauling a milk train) - and a few passenger turns but the brake translator loco also getting plenty of other services solo.

I doubt having a 57 off the sleeper at a gala would lead to a huge revenue jump for any event that did it, but I think overall it would be on the positive side of harmless. My impression is most diesel fans who post on forums ultimately want maximum time behind their preferred type, and if that's the same loco on one set of stock all day then that's fine. And that's a loyal crowd that's good for reliable revenue so it's right to look after their interests. For me, a gala ought to have a fair degree of 'you don't see that every day' variety, but events that satisfy my relatively rare needs on that front probably annoy their core market.
