Remember that the conneting rods, and often also coupling rods, would be removed from an engine moving any great distance unless it were in steam. Steam was needed for the atomisation of cylinder lubricating oil, while the coupling rods added to the drag of the engine. Often they were stored in the tender so, as said before, would disappear should the tender be sold.

Engines didnt always arive complete. 2968, for instance, was missing one clack valve and cylinder relief valves before leaving Springs Branch. I remeber searching all of Woodham's site for one of her return cranks and attached rod, but never found it. It was years later that I realised it was for the driver's side. The other side return crank and rod worked the mechanical lubricator and was in its rightful place, but I now suspect the the driver's side one was left on the ground at Springs Branch when the connecting and coupling rods were removed

I seem to recall reading in a Barry history online somewhere (sorry, I can't find it at the moment) that a number of tenders were sold off separately to a steel works where they (perhaps just the rolling chassis?) were used to transport things around the works until they wound up in the melting pot themselves.

Many tenders went to Briton Ferry steelworks for use as ingot carriers particularly the Bulleids and BR standards. IIRC at least one, very battered, frame survived to enter preservation. Ray.

Camelot (on the Bluebell) had a tender frame from Briton Ferry, bought for £500. The upper parts are entirely new construction.

U Boat 1638 also emerged from Barry without a tender; the current tender is again a brand new top on an ex-Schools class tender underframe, which had survived as a snow plough.

Hasn't 73096 on the MHR got an ex LMS (Stanier?) tender frame modified with roller bearings with a new Standard tender body attached. Looks alright on it's own, but shorter that the normal Standard tender stood side by side.

From memory 73096 has a jubilee tender chassis. But can anyone remember which loco the tender was taken from?

Was it Kolhapur? If I remember rightly, Kolhapur had a 3500 gallon tender and Tyseley got a 4000 gall tender from Cashmore's Great Bridge, possibly from either Alberta or Achilles, to replace it. This resulted in Tyseley having a spare tender, which was purchased for use with 73096.

Possibly, they look like the yellow/red roller bearing covers whatever the case.

Interesting, as I believe Kolhapur's tender tank is now behind 48305, mounted on a Fowler chassis (the Fowler tender tank was scrapped).
