Just to digress for a moment but it does illustrate the point about all operators not being the same and I know it isn't rail travel but.....

I recently found myself receiving an email just 12 hours before a ferry crossing telling me that the sailing had been cancelled and I should rebook or travel to another Channel port where the same company would slot me in at my time of arrival. So I started off at the same time, went to Dover where I crossed on the same ticket and swallowed hard as I incurred the extra travel costs - fuel and peage charges.

Contacted the operator today who apologised for the inconvenience, gave me a full refund for the cancelled crossing and didn't charge me for the crossing that I actually took. Their T&C were clear about what happens when a ferry is delayed or cancelled but didn't include what they did in my case. It's called Customer Service, I think.

Judging by your quoted tweet you seem to be of the opinions charters routinely fail to deliver as advertised, commending a notable recent exception. Yet here you are offering a sermon on why in the "real world" it is unrealistic to expect commercial ventures to offer some compensation if they are not able to provide the intended quality of service. Perhaps you need to think that through a bit further?
As an aside it seems to be customary for discounts to be offered the closer to the date of running gets so I dont see any reason why similar discount couldn't be applied or given for reduced steam element.
As far as my position to comment, I'm like a lot of folk on NP participant, customer, observer and commentator. In this matter I'm simply expressing an opinion that, in terms of good practice, more could and probably should done to both inform customers their purchase will be altered due to unforseen circumstances and secondly, the advertising should reflect the prevailing conditions so that purchasing takes place on the basis of the best available information at the time. Even if there is some hope the ban will be lifted, if the odds are against this it should be prominently mentioned as far as I'm concerned. This standpoint is actuated by an intrinsic belief in "fairness" and the principle of "doing the right thing" - these may be anathema, given your professional background but mine has shaped me that way. I am also able to be sufficiently objective to be able to realise that, much as I enjoy steam charters, promoters cannot expect any dispensation from normal trading conventions. It is important for the sustainability of the product not to rely upon the largesse of the old guard, enthusiast based core. I want and hope mainline steam thrives but the industrywill need to adapt to do so.
Not sure why you have chosen to challenge me particularly; maybe you are hoping it will be seen favourably in the eyes of persons you may have a journalistic interest in building relations with? I suggest you just contact them directly if so, I'm of no relevance or interest to them.

Sorry...not livery authentic. By the time the wires went up they were all in BR blue! The passengers should be given a partial refund for livery failure ;)

Maybe passengers should be charged extra for the bonus of three different types of traction as opposed to the two advertised, solo electric, steam+diesel and solo diesel. :)

It would at least be something to tell the passengers of this unexpected treat.
It is really rather odd the reaction to suggesting that if something can't be supplied as advertised a supplementary offer of some reccompense might be in order.
Not suggesting a refund should be automatic, only the invitation to apply, if minded. Given the perceived indifference to the show pony, uptake would probably be low and likely outweighed by the benefits in customer relations yielding future bookings. No brainer to me but obviously different ideas in other quarters.

That must be the fastest climb of Shap by a CME What did the customers miss, rows of parked cars chopped down trees and a forest Is this the way to go?

I guess all comes down to the tour company etc knowing what they have to do to maintain a profitable business and have the record to show this, whereas you don't.

A notable addition to the steam rescues diesel legends. Even more interesting given the steam loco was technically banned as traction unit
