This shot of Flying Scotsman "flying" over Galgate marina on Saturday evening combine my hobbies of canal and railway photography. It's a pity I could not get my boat in the photo, but I was stood on the rear deck taking this shot :)

For those planning on taking photos, steam will come off at Preston not Farington junction as the train is too long for the headshunt.

LMS 45699 Galatea at Greenholme/Scout Green and Kirkby Stephen . Also in the video is footage of 60009 on the Settle & Carlisle Golden Express and 45690 Leander on the Northbound Waverley .

Not the train that is to long for the head shunt, just the two locos and support coach, the stock remains on the Farington Old Curve.

Terrific shot Henry and good to see a pony not just for show. Whether the folks looking after the diesel fleet will be quite so thrilled with the clag is another matter ....

I really enjoyed yesterday’s trip - Galatea looked fantastic and it was also quite special to pass Leander on the outskirts of Carlisle. Well done to whoever pathed the charters at NR! I’ve attached a photo which I’m quite pleased with.

As I mentioned in the ‘Waverley’ thread, yesterday was a day to celebrate - three charters running over the S&C 50 years after the ‘end’ is mightily impressive. Yes, it would have been nice if there was unassisted steam but sadly, NR, TOCs and promoters can’t control what the weather does!

I wonder if those who moaned would also complain if all three had been cancelled / postponed because there wouldn’t have been any steam over the S&C on the anniversary? Food for thought...

Thankfully there was minimal moaning onboard - and it was good to hear Galatea when she was allowed to work.

More than that, however, my day was made as I was able to speak to a couple of people who were onboard ‘1T57’ - both, initially, said they couldn’t remember much but it was lovely how their memories’ were jogged throughout the chat. I also spoke to a chap who photo’d the end of steam and was selling a book about it, while Les the guard (not Les the TM) told me a few tales from his days firing.

Thanks to Nigel and co for running it, WCRC for providing the traction and crews and NR for letting us play on the mainline.

Thoroughly enjoyed yesterday. Was great to hear the jubilee work. Was lovely to meet Les Ross and talk about his 'machine'

Thank you to all who made it happen.

I posted these photos I took of Oliver Cromwell leaving Carlisle for the 'last' time on the other thread yesterday. It was a strange feeling of emptiness after the double-headed return leg of the Fifteen Guinea Special departed and later 70013, which had brought it north made its lonely way past Durran Hill.

As far as we were concerned we were watching our ever last steam working, because there was only 4472 left and I wasn't particulaly enamoured of that 'Peglerised' A3 with its single chimney and double tender, and it was going to be off to the USA shortly anyway.

Note the signalman watching the passing.

Nice one Henry as I thought 45699 seemed to open up a good bit after Kirkby Stephen much to your benefit I would say:)

Running charter trains on the mainline, steam or otherwise, is emphatically not playing. It is an important industry.
