    kN converter here:

Perhaps a better figure to gain an idea of performance would be leistung = power 1472kW = 1973 hp.

See pp 52 of "Bulleid of the Southern" by H A V Bulleid. Two variants. First has outside cylinders 19 * 30 inches, and inside 20.5 * 26. Second has Helmholtz front truck and MN style casing. Worth finding a copy, lots more interesting details of their evolution.

As drawn, the first variant has conventional boiler cladding, albeit with a strongly raked back cab front. The drawing is dated not too long after Bulleid arrived on the Southern, so there is a certain transition from Maunsell to Bulleid ideas. The second is drawn with what looks like "air smoothed" casing, a-la Merchant Navy, high boiler-pressure boiler, with a typically Bulleid tender - clearly much more Bulleid influence at work.

Incidentally, in the light of discussion about the flexibility or otherwise of a 2-8-2, the first design lists the sideplay on each axle. Counting from the front (i.e. the pony truck), the values listed are:

    +/- 5 inches
    +/- 5/8 inch
    +/- 3/32 inch
    +/- 3/32 inch
    +/- 5/8 inch
    +/- 5 3/8 inches

The second diagram doesn't mention those figures, but since one of the original objections was about track handling, presumably there was a greater degree of flexibility implied.

And, before we take all this too seriously, it's worth quoting from HAV Bulleid's book:

Apologies if the links earlier in this topic cover this, but in Cox's "BR Standard Steam Locomotives" book, pp49-50 there are drawings of two proposed 2-8-2 designs. There is a "type 72" mixed traffic class 5, which looks rather like an elongated Standard 5 as we know them, but with a wide firebox and double chimney, and a " type 90"--"9F lookalike" 2-8-2. The former was proposed as mixed traffic, and although the diagram does not note the coupled wheel diameter, it is clearly greater than the 2-8-2 "9F".

Off-topic, but there was also an "eight-coupled" proposal on the LMS which never saw the light of day. That was for a class five 2-8-4T tank engine for the most demanding suburban work. It would have looked like a Stanier or Fairburn taper boiler 2-6-4T, but with eight smaller 5ft 3inch drivers.

Its interesting to compare with US practice at the zenith of development when relatively large wheeled 2-8-4 and 2-10-4 designs were the preferred types for high tonnage high speed service. The earlier types with a 2 wheel trailing truck had restricted the size of the firebox (and importantly combustion chamber) thus limiting steam production capability.

To spam can, thanks i will add this to my profile gallery (Mikado Fest) is it a Historical drawing or a contemporary drafting up of a proposal ?
To 46118 - the missing wheel dimension is 5' 3". clearly some people at derby had done some work on the viability of an eight coupled 5ft 3 wheelbase
and took that with them to the Standards committee.
I find it Ironic that although the Standards committee were scathing of Bulleids pacifics especially the more ''novel' features the Light pacific idea
was clearly something that impressed - hence the Brittannias and Clans and yet Both Bulleid initially and Riddles latterly had very similar ideas on the
all purpose engine: not a pacific but a 2-8-2 , medium wheels, poppet valve gear.

To SG, yes but nothing in the uk (garrats aside) has needed a grate area bigger than 50ft sq so a 2 wheel trailing truck has always sufficed.....
its the wide adoption of the single pair of leading wheels that interests, which makes the us / continental development from 4 -6 -2 not to 4-6-4 but to 2 -8-2 thence to 2-8-4 telling.

Sorry BP not the case, the wheels are 21mm diameter from a kit supplier (dont know whether that includes the tyres) they are pretty accurate to the 5ft 3 envisaged for the 1951 design for this locomotive
Started life as a Brittania model, the frames and motion are bespoke build, pony truck and cylinders (?)of a 9f (?) ... so not disimilar to what you'd need to build one for real....any takers ?

Also its the work of Ian Mellors of Redgate Models (not my good self) who has saved me the cost of commissioning one for the time being. and in true nat pres style it was painted unlined black first (see my profile gallery Mikado fest) but unless i buy it it wont be going green any time soon....

I am copying the Post to a more relevant thread...

    Found this today....:)

Theres also a report written by the maker on the Vendors website ( Station road steam) wheels are 5ft 3 to scale and the tender chassis is the stretched '6'000 gallon' design to scale.... The Royal scott is a believe by the same builder, what happened to force the sale i do not know.

Give yourself a treat and visit their YT site, there are a few dozen clips tjere. Among oodles of superb locos, a substantial L&LSR 4-8-0 really appealed to me.

The 2-8-2 is superb, but Scots Guardsman in LMS Black... God I wish I'd had the spare cash to buy that!

May or June 1985 "Steam Railway" had a several page spread of locos showing never were. One was an air smoothed Bulleid 2-8-2.
The text states that the fitters at Stewarts lane and Nine Elms would not have thanked OVB for this monster.
