From the list of work on 45407:

.......New 'Corten' steel smokebox wrapper and sacrificial liner plates

A very interesting idea using Corten steel for this. Have been involved in Corten Steel on Bridges but not seen it used on locos.

Is there any previous experience of doing this?

(Corten Steel is the steel you see which is sometimes left unpainted with a rusted surface but having formed the surface rust then stops corroding unlike other steels)

Corten steel/copper steel was specified for the smokebox wrapper and sacrificial plates on the B.R. Std 2-10-0 smokebox drawing. Could well have been specified for other Std loco smokeboxes.
LMS locos designed by Stanier and Ivatt were fitted with copper steel smokeboxes and/or sacrificial plates. It appears that the use of copper steel on steam locomotives has been going on for some years.

So do they rot away like all the others or is there a big advantage in their use?

It apparently extends the life of those components, so yes there is an advantage.
