London to Southampton for Palace fans on 15th May for their last game of the season. The game itself will kick off at 3pm that day.

Steam through West Croydon... When was the last time that happened ?
The climb to Sutton through Wallington will be good.

Excellent. Just need to get JH on the Spurs board and then persuade him to build 61630 anew. :)

Just looked at RTT for this....

There's a lot of engineering works on that Sunday...

Looks like New Cross to East Croydon closed and Clapham thru Surbiton closed, SWT services are running either via Chertsey or terminating at Woking or Surbiton, Southern are running around east Croydon to Crystal Palace onto London Bridge.
I hope fans aren't planning London overground to catch this at West Croydon...its terminating at New Cross.

Depart Clapham Junction 09.30, Depart Selhurst 09.45, Depart West Croydon 09.50, Arrive Southampton Central 12.30 approx.
Depart Southampton Central 18.30, Arrive West Croydon 21.00, Arrive Selhurst 21.05, Arrive Clapham Junction 21.20 approx

Going to guess this is going Sutton to either Guildford or Horsham, then Havant to Southampton.

I can't see anything beyond "normal" diesel/ electric railtours along this route between West Croydon to Sutton on six bells, indeed the only unusual stuff I see is : Bulleids 20001 in 1969, 78038 /30053 in 1963/4, Sarah Siddons and the 2bil in the early 1980s... For preserved steam I see 34067 in December 2007 and 45407 in the reverse direction also in 2007.

Quite a rare steam route and a quite strong gradient!

Now.. Let's see what happens between fiction and 2016 reality.

Would love this if it was planned for LFC, which I doubt will ever happen though. :(

2010 (6201 for Vintage trains) I think was the last time a steam engine used Swansea station. Newcastle/Sunderland (if they stay up)/ Boro (if they come up) behind 5029 wouldn't be a bad away day ;)

Given that Chelsea regularly run foot-ex services without reported problems, I see no reason to think that their fans would behave worse than normal just because they're behind steam

At £200 a pop can't see this being the ultras somehow, especially with a potential cup final the following Saturday (although most of the Palace fans won't have far to go I suppose!).

Comment as a joke appears to have been misinterpreted - meant as ref to the past era of steam hauled excursions not current era.

    Apologies, no offence intended.

I remember back in the 60s the London teams used to go back up after Saturday games on the Belle. And one late night trip back sharing the buffet car home from Waterloo with Saints players. They were all wellied after getting whopped 8-0 IIRC away at Everton That was in a REP though after steam had finished. Good days.

I'm not great at rail routes, but am I right in thinking there's a possibility this will be going through Epsom & Leatherhead?

The most likely route is from West Croydon to Sutton, Epsom and Leatherhead (as you say), Effingham Junction to Guildford and then down the Portsmouth direct to Havant and along the coast to Soton. But there are other options. If they go that way then water needs to be taken with Haslemere a possibility.
