I haven't had a reply from the person that I tried to contact, it seems that he has moved on to other things. There has been an update in the latest in house magazine, it states that the documentation for the TAWS application is substantially complete but cannot be submitted until written agreements with the three owners of the land required have been signed and can be produced as part of the application package. It is hoped that this will be completed this year.

The Aviemore shed team must be burning copious amounts of midnight oil as 46512's boiler was returned to the frames today which means it won't be too far away from fully returning to service. That is a very fast turn around since it was only withdrawn at Halloween last year!

I've seen in two separate places some rumours about another locomotive joining the fleet but nothing substantial.

Given that they've also been overhauling 46464, is there any possibility they've been able to rush through 46512 by using bits of 46464?

Nice speculation but totally wrong, no parts from 46464 have been used in the repair of 46512. There are three loco projects taking place at the moment. 46512 is undergoing a ten-year boiler repair, It has had the lower 18” of the firebox replaced all round, sides, throat plate and back plate. Various stays renewed with some copper welding inside the firebox. The chassis and motion have had some attention, although it was generally in good condition, it was lifted recently for attention to the axle boxes. Expected to be back in service within 12 months of being withdrawn.

46464 is being overhauled by its owning group, the Carmyllie pilot company, with assistance of the Strathspey staff, its small band of volunteers and the Aviemore facilities. The boiler is at a contractor’s premises and is said to be well advanced. Completion probably sometime next year.

The other project is Austerity number 9. This loco is being stripped by a group of volunteers, as they progress, they are refurbishing parts and placing them into storage. This loco will need repairs to the firebox crown sheet owing to a botched contractor repair some years ago. One of the volunteers has created a blog of this repair. https://austerityno9.blogspot.com

Curious how much dimensional difference in parts there are between the Crewe and Swindon built examples. I know MK1s of the same design have differences dependent on where they were built.

Good to hear of that Austerity being overhauled. When I visited just over 5 years ago it was dumped in a siding with apparently little prospect of ever being repaired.

Just had a look at the Austerity blog. Are those tyres as thin as I think they are?

Hope the 37 is for restoration and use on the railway, I’m sure it would be useful at the Strathspey Railway.

It could be there for a contract restoration job. To my knowledge that's not something currently offered at Aviemore, but my knowledge does have gaps and it's not completely beyond the realms of possibility...

You could say that the primary role of all our diesels is the Royal Scotsman, apart from some engineering trains, that is all they do. There is a diesel gala next year however over 3 days, 18th / 19th & 20th March. The Royal Scotsman has got heavier, it is now 476 tons, we know this because we have the equipment to weigh it, also when it arrives top and tailed sometimes, we have to tow a class 66 on the back of it. When this happens it is around 600 tons, the class 27 can handle this, however it is probably at the top end of its performance.

Sorry, for those of us who are unfamiliar, what is the Royal Scotsman?
