......back on track: Will 6229 be allowed to run on NR, owing to the fact that the front casing, when opened to access the smokebox, fouls the loading gauge? The avoidance of this was an important criterion in the design of the A4s' streamlining.

Good point, But could the hinge pins be 'removeable' such that in an emergency it could be completely dropped off the Front, Ps Nice to hear from you, thought you were dead...

You can operate an A4 'under the wires' where opening the 'Cods Mouth' is prohibited. The principal would seem to be the same but in practice it might be more problematic.

I hate to pour cold water on this, but Helen Ashby of NRM fame quite clearly stated in Steam Railway that 6229 would not be overhauled any time soon. Also, if you read the articles written on NRM+, there is clear mention of a streamlined section containing Mallard and 6229.

Anything can change, but I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.

Page 14 of this weeks Railway Herald Steve Davies says, 'I am not going to forecast the date of her resurrection, what I am doing is indicating that this might be sooner than people think'.
Helen Ashby added that as well as restoring the loco the thinking at the NRM would be to rebrand a rake of coaches into 'Coronation Scot' livery....
How things change in a few months.

Is it worth £10 a month though, or more to the point can I afford it, perhaps if the govt. do manage to raise the pension to £140 a week then maybe.

If they raise our pensions, it will be a fraud as are most of their policies. Most probably the pension might go up a bit but our taxes will rise more.

Oh no, not another tenner a month, I'm into two of those already. Mind you for the "price of a weekly pint" that ought to be £12/month now

Might have to go back to work :pout:

Man what a sight a restored 6229 would be. Hopefully they might throw in a visit to the ELR again.........:smile:

Sounds great. But could this be a April Fools' Day joke?

How can stating a possibility before April 1st be an April fools joke? If it was said on Friday morning that the Duchess was to be restored & a rake of coaches would be put into Coronation Scot livery then fair enough.

Hee hee, a streamlined Duchess and train "sooner than people think".......

That should generate more threads, posts and insults than Tornado and Scotsman between them. And that's before we start arguing about the blue and wartime black options.....

I've still got a rather dated model of 6245 City of London in wartime black, streamlined, from when I used to collect the models. Like the stripped duchesses, the streamliners also look good in black. IMO
