Just look at the mileage and the timings, get the train out of Liverpool and off the Manchester line, then let it sit out of the way at Warrington until the path through Frodsham was clear.
Broad Green, just over 4 miles scheduled 16 minutes, then the further 11 miles to Earlestown with 22 minutes scheduled, plus a 7 minute stop not taken there. Total of 1 hour 9 minutes scheduled to Warrington which is about 20 miles, no wonder they 22 early.

It was very easy timing to Warrington. Left Bank Q on time and had already gained 2mins by Acton Grange, 4mins start to pass is good going, all academic now as its just another diesel run.

I'm sure you're right, but on the many occasions I've been at St Helens Central when CME's stop I've NEVER seen one that far up the line!

Just checked with the notes for the trip, off the platform were the loco, support coach, brake and two others.

The Duchess is expected to be the motive power for the CME this coming Saturday.

I have read a few sources and made some observations.

Railway herald 6233 Crewe-Shap-Carlisle-Settle-Crewe for 3rd & 4th cme's. Also mentioned in Facebook 46233 page. The 5th and final cme rytc will have to allocate motive power since 60009 shall be up in Scotland on Scotrail trips and 46233 is up for a few steam dream tours early September.

RTT has timings up for 15th August, 1Z62, routed Crewe-Manchester-Blackburn-Hellifield-Appleby-Carlisle outward, not Preston-Shap.

Which ties in with those running from Liverpool, North via the S&C.

The "Manchester" CMEs were advertised running via Bolton but the weekend closure of the line (until Oct) always meant that the trains would be re-routed. I guess that it was easier to run them the same way round as the Liverpool trains. We are booked on the 15 Aug train and I was looking forward to Shap northbound with a warm loco; but if it's the Duchess you can't be disappointed.

The last run southbound over Shap did not disappoint, I should be on this weekend as well so we shall see how she performs again.

It certainly didn't, I saw your post re the speeds. I wonder if the Manchester CMEs will run without a diesel.

The Manchester ones have always run without a diesel in previous years. The Liverpool ones only usually have the diesel on because they have to reverse at Lime Street.

Thanks for the info, if the diesel stays "at home" there's no need to worry about gaps between buffers, taking its own weight etc. It will be my first run southbound over Shap with the Duchess, so I'm hoping for good coal and a willing fireman.
