Thanks to both for a comprehensive resume. Most interesting.

Are 1501, 7714, and 6634 likely contenders for service in 2011?

In asking that, I do appreciate that it depends on activety away from Bridgnorth for at least two of these engines.

Only a personal guesstimate but would see returns to traffic as:

    2857 - first half of 2011
    1501 - second half of 2011
    7714 - end of 2011/beginning of 2012
6634 - 2012 depending on boiler completion at Crewe
34027 - dependant on boiler completion at Pridham's/SDR

    November loco notes
Mark Vrettos reports from the BH mpd http://bridgnorthstation.blogspot.com/

Early in October we used the wheeldrop for Bradley Manor to drop out the leading tender wheelset which had wheel flats.

We seem to be getting a lot of these recently with 42968's tender being withdrawn early, and a number of carriages red carded. There are some views on how these appear, and we must get a grip of this problem, as it is now costing the railway serious time and money.

2857 was lowered onto its wheels on Monday 25 October. Now all the bits can be bolted on. It will come off the jacks when the springs and rods are fitted. The boiler is being readied for its steam test and safety valve setting. After this we will be looking for a gang to paint the boiler with the heat resistant paint, planned for 4-5 Nov.

We are planning the next few months of work going into next year. We need to get some more midweek help to push the various projects along.

1501, 813 (contract), 5164 (wheeldrop, 53,000 miles), and a start on 75069 are in the frame, along with finishing 2857 and 6634.

As well as this, we need to carry out a valve and piston exam on 7802, so there is a massive undertaking of work required.

If it is left to paid staff only, we will have to drop overhauls in favour of running repairs, and we need 2857 for next year's season.

To do all this we need more help than we get at the moment. The railway being shut in January-early February does not mean that the work stops. In the loco works, conversely, it increases!

Interesting to read this as I believed from what I heard/read elsewhere that the overhaul of the loco was postponed indefinately as a result of the recent assessment throwing up far more work required than was hoped. Would be a fantastic (and very useful) loco to have back in oepration on the SVR.

From my understanding it was never indefinite, just a case of 1501 queue jumping. The amount of work needed will put it very much in the longer term 'heavy' category akin to 43106/2857 whereas 1501 needed less work and could mean a useful loco quicker. Though must admit it's a pleasant suprise to see it being considered again so quickly.

Then there were 8! Undergoing renovation are 4150 at Bewdley; 2857, 34027, 6634, 1501, 7714 (boiler) at Bridgnorth and 813 and 2047 having contract boiler assessments.

In addition to works on 75069 being 'in the frame' possibly to start in 2011, the Friends of Hagley Hall website http://www.4930hagleyhall.org.uk/ has a news update which says that the overhaul is due to commence in 2012 subject to completion of Taw Valley, successful fund raising done by the Friends reaching £100,000 and there being no loco prior failures that may take precedence in the overhaul queue.

For those that find it of interest.

Warwickshire was delivered to BH this afternoon by Allerlys.

Apologies if I've missed it somewhere, but why the move?

It's interesting that it was moved from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth by Alleleys - last time I looked they were a road haulage company, and Bridgnorth and Kidderminster were joined by a perfectly servicable railway line!

Is that 'Taw Valley's boiler on blocks at Bridgenorth?

If you mean the one in the yard that is Sidmouth's.

I presume it was because work has now commenced on the Bridgnorth to Highley section, making it nonnegotiable...?

It is also rather a long time since Warwickshire turned a wheel - no doubt quite a lot of work would have been necessary just to get it onto the running lines (the museum is not rail connected currently) and sort axleboxes, motion etc.

I was hoping it wasn't 'Taw Valley''s because the smokebox is so badly corroded. Is the rest of 'Sidmouth' on site?

The rest of Sidmouth is spread between the Swanage and Herston works.

Isn't 7325 overhaul supposed to start in 2012, too?

  20. D1039

    D1039 Guest

Michael, the last published list I saw (in 2009 and therefore dates suspect?) was:

    7325, from late 2011 completing in 2014
    46443, 2012 to 2014
    7802, 2015 to 2017
    7714, from 2010
    80079, starting 2016.

"But just remember that these timings are the outline plan forecast to 2016 and are for the major overhauls and therefore finance and resource could alter the sequence".
