I was just wondering when the last time was that the SVR didn't have a working pannier.

Since the early 90's (1993?) when 7714 first entered service, the two panniers do seem to have been well synced with the third 'spare' boiler between them limiting time out of service for either. I guess the last time the SVR was 'pannierless' would've been whenever 5764 was out of service prior to 1993. Put another way, at least 17 years! (the motive power crisis problems in the early noughties with the water problems notwithstanding).

5764 was in service in 1991 following overhaul. For just shy of 20 years there has been a Pannier in service on the valley.

I don't think it will be without one for too long. 1501 is in the works and I think the plan is for 7714 to be returned to traffic (?).

Yes, 7714 is to return: when 5764 goes into the Engine House 7714 is to come out. Overhaul of the currently spare pannier boiler is already in hand at Bridgnorth and it's planned for this to go onto 7714.

As you said, 1501 is already at Bridgnorth with its boiler's heavy overhaul started in February 2010.

I don't have any insight into dates, they'll be ready when they're ready!

Bit of bad news (have also posted this in the thief watch section but in case anybody misses it or wanted to discuss it thought I would put it here as well)

2857 website pages http://www.2857.org.uk/2857_news.html are updated with details and pictures of the locomotive’s reassembly. As at 15 January the boiler cladding is nearing completion and the cab is taking shape, with backhead cladding, sight feed lubricator, fire hole doors, spectacle plate and the roof fitted. © 2857 Society 2007-2009

7812 will travel on 5 February (per traffic notes) to the West Somerset Railway to work over half-term and their spring gala 19-20 and 24 to 27 March. She will then be the guest loco for The Llangollen Railway’s Spring Steam Gala from 8 to 10 April. http://www.llangollen-railway.co.uk/page.php?id=1. Despite returning to steam from Barry condition as long ago as 1979 this will be the first working visit for this loco away from the SVR apart from a brief spell of mainline running on BR in the early 1980's.

7819 is currently on display at Swindon. The McArthur Glenn management have agreed that SVR Rolling Stock Trust can set up a DVD playing a 50 minute film of her in action on the SVR and mainline up to the time of her withdrawal and storage. The people of Swindon will soon be able to enjoy a cup of coffee to the sounds of Hinton Manor storming up a variety of Welsh hills and we hope they enjoy it enough to drop a bit of money our way. The equipment has been donated and PAT tested at Kidderminster prior to dispatch. There’s also a review of overhaul preparation and fundraising here including how to obtain a copy of the DVD. http://www.svr-rollingstocktrust.org.uk/

42968 reached 100,000 miles of running since her original restoration in 1990. Meanwhile, her Fowler tender was lifted on 15 December, the wheels were removed and sent to the South Devon Railway for retyring. The bodywork was placed on a well wagon and preparations are being made for shot blasting of the underside. She will continue running paired with the tender of 'Black Five' no. 45110 until the expiry of her boiler ticket, expected in 2012. http://www.staniermogulfund.org.uk/ © Copyright The Stanier Mogul Fund.

Fantastic, she looks great with the Stanier tender behind her; much sleeker and smoother than the Fowler one.

It may look good, but it's not much fun to drive tender first!

What's the problem? Is it any different from the Black 5 or 8F?

2968 had some kit fitted for TPWS and that sort of stuff, when it was planned to go mainline a couple of years ago. This has necessitated movineg the driver's seat hinge up a few inches, which means that, when it is flipped vertical, it protrudes above the window sill, on which one normally leans, when driving tender first, making this impossible. The great slab side of a LMS tender is always a bit restrictive, vision-wise; they were made to be driven forwards. The Fowler tender, being narrower than the cab, gives much better vision, although, of course, it is not so good at keeping the weather out. You can't win! No-one said this had to be easy.

7802 - Collett 'Bradley Manor', Ex GWR… A piston and valve exam and a number of minor pre season repairs were being undertaken, however it looks like this is now out of traffic for some time having had the boiler failed on 11 February. Work was also underway to replace the wooden cab floor with new timber, the old one being worn (first laid 1993). http://forum.svra.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=26890#26890

Maybe you can lend us an engine - 7903, 92203, the 8F or 2807 would all be good replacements!!!

I would if I could, but don't let my moniker confuse you, I am not from the Cotswold line unfortunately, just someone who was once a kid growing up on the GW mainline :sorry:
