I have an overwhelming desire to see 2807 and 2857 together again, other than in Barry Scrapyard! I remember seeing 2857 in steam the "first time around" in preservation and it gave me a real morale boost to think that 2807 might look the same. It took a while but we got there. Perhaps a visit by 2807 to the SVR or a (return) visit by 2857 to Toddington (once Chicken Curve is fixed) perhaps?!

2807 & 2857 would indeed make an extremely interesting comparison!

It is perhaps not widely realised just how much sheer hard work, acquired skill & perseverence was put into the firstly the tender & then particularly the boiler overhaul by key members of the owning group over several years.

This is illustrated on the society's own website here across the years.

    http://www.2857.org.uk/2857_news.html

There is no doubt that this loco would not be back in traffic without this significant volunteer effort coupled with substantial recent effort from the full time MPD staff at Bridgnorth.

Worthy of an award? - most definately!

7802 Bradley Manor - In conjunction with SVR management, arrangements have been finalised for the early mechanical overhaul of the loco for 2012 completion using EMF funding and discussions are in progress regarding the overhaul of the boiler. A more detailed announcement and associated fundraising initiative will follow late August/early September and the Erlestoke Manor Fund looks forward to support with this. (SVRA forum).

6634 - 0-6-2 Tank Class 6600, Ex GWR... Unsung heroes are the small group fabricating a new cab for 6634. For months they have been cutting and drilling new pieces of steel plate using the wafer thing original ex-Barry parts as patterns. Their patience is being rewarded as painting is underway and assembly is imminent (The Bugle, SVRA website).

2857 will be out of traffic for a short period from 1 August onwards for boiler washout and attention to any minor repairs arising from her first full week’s running (group website).

43106 Washout and boiler exam from 2 August.

Very interesting and unexpected news regarding 7802, which wasn't previously expected back until 2016..ish.. I wonder how they expect to get 7802 back inservice for 2012 when the SVR's workshops are preoccupied with other locos such as 1501, 34027 & 6634? 75069 is also expected to go in on completion of 1501. Could the boiler overhaul be carried out elsewhere? IIRC some of 7812's overhaul was carried out by Swindon before it closed.. Must also indicate that Bradley's bottom end isn't too bad either. Suprising, intriguing but also excellent news.

Plans can be changed, and as 7802 is in quite good condition compared to 75069 and the SVR need locos quickly, it was something going around as a possibility for a while.

Please re read the origonal post. Nothing in that states that 7802 will return to service in 2012. What has been arranged so far is the MECHANICAL overhaul of the loco by then in a way which does not impinge on mechanical progress on any of the other locos you have quoted and also 7714 which you omitted. Discussions regarding the BOILER overhaul continue.

2857 - Churchward, Ex GWR… was out of traffic from 1 August onwards for boiler exam and attention to minor repairs arising from her first full week’s running, but she was back in traffic by 17 August.
4566 - Small Prairie Tank, Ex GWR... Having been out for repairs to her injectors, on 2 August 4566, running instead of 92212, suffered a broken spring (her third this year) and was replaced by ‘Thunderbird’ Class 20 D8188 (SVRA forum). She was also unavailable the week of 12 August for washout and boiler exam.
5164 - Prairie Tank, Ex GWR… had a washout and boiler exam from 9 August. Thunderbird 3 (Class 20) deputised on 17 August when 5164 failed with part of her firebox grate collapsed (SVRA forum).
7802 - Collett 'Bradley Manor', Ex GWR… was withdrawn from traffic in February after failing a boiler exam. Steam Railway magazine reports that her boiler will be removed and will be stripped at Bridgnorth for assessment. Her "bottom half" is going to Tyseley where work will commence in the Autumn and is scheduled for completion in 6 months, i.e. by late spring 2012. Completion of the chassis will be a major move forward towards a return to service, but completion of the boiler and hence the complete loco will depend upon the assessment and subsequent repair requirement/timetable. 7802 went back into service in 2002 with an overhauled boiler using only ‘Reverse Osmosis’ (RO) treated water (prior to that it was stopped with defects arising in part from the use of non-RO water). This is the boiler that will be stripped but the tubes have lasted a full 9 years, bar 3 being changed a few months prior to withdrawal early this year due to thinning of the ends due to erosion after considerable use, rather than waterside corrosion as would have been the case before RO (SVRA forum).
7812 - Collett 'Erlestoke Manor', Ex GWR... was reported on 5 August as having crosshead repairs and is in use
42968 - Stanier Mogul, Ex LMS... was reported on 5 August as having ashpan repairs and although she returned to traffic by 13 August she was out of action again with a variety of small problems (cylinder, firebox, vacuum brake), which will hopefully be repaired by the weekend (SVRA forum).
43106 - Ivatt Class 4, LMS-design... was taken by road to North Norfolk Railway on 15 August for their Grand Steam Gala 2 - 4 September.
82045 – Standard Class 3, BR-design... As reported elsewhere the smokebox saddle is now sitting alongside the frames and the first undercoat is being applied. It’s expected to be fitted into frames shortly together with front pony truck fabrication. A template has been drilled that will enable the cylinders, once made, to be drilled accurately despite the presence of the, by then fitted, smokebox saddle. SVRA online
Catch me who can... Work continues on fitting the lagging strips and making various bits of ironmongery to go with it. The group now has all the strips fitted on the easy side. Many of the strips have to be cut to fit round various projections on the boiler and cut away at the back to fit over the mounting pads, but when the strips and bands are all in place they will artfully conceal everything, so it will be hard to see where all the work went. Progress is also being made on the chimney, with the forging of an arm for the damper which will be fitted in the base of the chimney. This is quite different from later practice where the fire was controlled by restricting the air flow into it. Catch Me Who Can will be in steam for the Peep Behind The Scenes weekend on 3-4 September. CMWC website

What engines do the SVR currently have (nominally) available for traffic on the SVR (so excluding the Pig)? Presumably 2857, 4566, 5164, 7812, 42968 and 92212; have I missed anything?

Ah thanks; had a feeling I'd missed something out!

Following on from that, how many locos are required in steam each day during the peak season?

If you look at the link previously posted it tells you which locos are due in use each day - varies in number between weekdays & weekends.

34027 - Bulleid West Country, 'Taw Valley', Ex SR... Progress is continuing. The owner has decided to retain and refurbish the air brake system to give the railway an operable air brake loco for charters: the air pump has now been refitted after a comprehensive overhaul. On the boiler front at Pridham’s (South Devon Railway), work is focussing on the inner firebox and the new thermic syphons. These are now almost fully fabricated and will need staying, work is about 3 - 4 weeks away from offering the inner firebox into the outer one and starting the welding and staying process to reassemble them. Notwithstanding the work being done on Flying Scotsman, the owner wonders whether this is one of the most comprehensive boiler repairs yet undertaken in preservation, as there isn't much of the original boiler left now. Owner update on the SVRA forum

Furness Railway 150 'Cumbria'... Hunslet Austerity 'Cumbria' (works no 3794) arrived at Bridgnorth Boilershop on 1 August 2011. The boiler requires a full overhaul before it can be steamed again. The Furness Railway Trust locomotive is nominally based at the Ribble Steam Railway and it is expected the overhaul of the boiler at Bridgnorth will concentrate on crown stay replacement, attention to the firebox tubeplate, a replacement smokebox, and full re-tube, hydraulic and steam test. SVR Contract Engineering website

92212 – Standard Class 9F, Ex-BR... comes to us by courtesy of its owners and with the assistance of the Mid-Hants Railway, and will be remaining with us until September. She is listed for washout and boiler exam from 30 August. SVR website

4566 - Small Prairie Tank, Ex GWR... Having been unavailable the week of 12 August for washout and boiler exam, and listed for repairs the following week, she is listed as one of the spare engines from 27 August. SVR website

2857 - Churchward, Ex GWR… is now back in service for 28 consecutive days starting from 20 August. She is working from Bewdley shed (i.e. trains starting from Kidderminster), the normal pattern being alternating - one day working the first departure, then the next day the second etc. (2857 website)

Thanks for posting Patrick, good to hear progress on T.V. I hope the owner has a change of heart regarding mainline running, if only occaisionally, she was always such a powerful performer.

    Thanks

IIRC the owner and SVR considered mainline running before it was discounted. SVR decided to pull out of the mainline steam some time ago. Were an owner to do so this would need considerable extra resource from the MPD and I'm not sure, with other pressure of work, whether the SVR would be able to or want to support it.

My own comments you understand, not the SVR's or the owner's
