All visiting Autumn Gala locos have now returned home, with the exception of Caledonian 828 which has been used on occasional charters and service trains, the latter double headed with 4566. 828 is currently having its motion removed and stored, before being lifted to extract the driving wheels, which are to be re-tyred.

The EMF team have advanced the overhaul of 7802, the boiler having been removed for assessment at Bridgnorth, with the frames having been moved to Tyseley Works for contract repair.

Work on 5164 is progressing well, with a view to having the loco available for the Santa season trains. The leading driving wheel set is about to be replaced using the wheel drop following axle box repairs, with a test steaming and the trial run is imminent.

The frames of 813 recently had the springs re-fitted, whilst renewal of the lower section of the outer-firebox continues in the boiler shop.

The Fowler tender for 42968 has recently had the box sections of the drag box cleaned and painted, brake rigging re-fitted and upon completion of the associated connections to the loco the job will be virtually complete.

Progress continues on 34027, re-fitting the lubrication system, cleaning and painting the firebox cladding and running plate sections.

The various refurbished components of 1501 are soon to be reassembled, with the boiler having been re-tubed in preparation for steam testing.

How I'd like 5764 to be on test! It's in the Engine House, out of ticket, and reported by Steam Railway as under discussion between the SVR and NRM for it to go on display in York

As Lewis said, 5164 is one of the GWR large Prairies on the line. She has been out of use for valve and axlebox repairs from 10 September. Having shared a lot of the traffic this season, she is having a long-overdue bottom end and axle box overhaul. The wheelsets were removed using the wheeldrop, again proving the use of this facility for routine maintenance work. New valves and pistons were fitted, cross heads, motion bushes and leading axle boxes have been metalled and machined. The leading driving wheel set was about to be replaced using the wheel drop following axle box repairs at 18 November. She had her steam test 24 November, and was due to get some running in done soon, with the loco good for Santa trains.

EDIT: The test run is due to take place Tuesday 29/11, per SVR website

I thought the 57XX's were on a kind of permenant rotation what with 3 boilers being used between 2 loco's ?.

But surely in the current situation only the spare boiler is being worked on? Safe to say 5764's hasn't and i don't think 7714 has left the engine house so 5764 would have a while to wait anyway whilst the one sitting on 7714 is worked on.

The current spare boiler is not being worked on at present, it is planned to be advanced on the completion of 1501's (SVR News 175). That was well advanced with only beading of the firebox end and a small quantity in the Smokebox to be undertaken. The boiler will then have some further work carried out on the boiler faces, before it is blanked off and prepared for an insurance hydraulic test (SVR Engineering).

At some stage, therefore, 7714 will be extracted from the shed and its current boiler removed. I'm not aware of plans for that to be overhauled immediately for 5764, but I'm not 'in the know'.

The last SVR News did mention the amount of contract boiler work leaves space for only two medium-sized SVR boilers. After 1501 will be the pannier's, and 7802's is already there. Whether the two standard 4s would be next and whether their boilers will be SVR or contract jobs I'm not sure.

    Busy times!

Patrick: re your final comment above: "...leaves space for only two medium-sized SVR boilers". Before anyone jumps in with an inference from that, perhaps the full comment is better shown, as follows:
"The boiler shop contract (work) does not interfere with the SVR repairs due to it being set up as as a separate unit within the shop as regards labour, but it has now filled the working space, allowing just enough room to work on, say two, medium sized SVR boilers in the remainder."

The difference being, I hardly need say, is that other owners and organisations are paying for contract boiler work, as against the SVR in appropriate cases funding its own costs for such work.

It might also be worth adding that the repairs to the spare Pannier boiler for 7714, ( parts being provided by an outside supplier) and the overhaul of GWR 0-6-2T 6634 ( in partnership with LNWR Crewe) both appear to have taken longer than originally flagged. The SVR could well use both engines asap.

So, to be absolutely certain about this, contract work does not interfere in any way with work done for and by the railway for it's own purposes ...

That seems to be the case but the boiler shop could do contract work on SVR boilers that aren't being funded by the SVR Co Limited/whatever.

The SVR have released a Masterplan for the redevelopment of Bridgnorth station subject to successful fund raising of course. Some very interesting proposals mooted for the station itself as well as the long overdue replacement of the 'temporary' buffet facilities that have already lasted 30 years! Constructive feedback is invited.

5764 was bought up to Kidderminster Carriage Shed from the Engine house 5 December along with 686 'The Lady Armaghdale for stabling prior to the severing of the line, so they are available for onward transport by road (5764 to York, 686, watch this space). 46443 is planned to be taken up to Highley to fill in the gap in the near future.

Loco rosters for the following week aren't generally decided until friday afternoons, so your best bet would be to check the SVR website or here tomorrow. I would suggest it probably will be running as it makes sense for us to get as much use out of it as we can whilst we have it! (but thats not official!)

    Cheers,
    Andy
