    From various places:
A note has gone out stating that the trial was a success and as a result the SVR will use Welsh coal from now on.
Various notes in the April roundup NBI:
75069’s new rear loco drag box is on site. The tender has been re-wheeled and a new piston rod machined.
7714 has had cylinder liners fitted. Optical alignment is taking place.
42968 volunteers continue to strip down the loco in preparation for overhaul.
34027 work continues on reaming stays for the boiler. Stays are being produced.
    4150 restoration update http://www.4150.org.uk/news/4150_apr14.html
1501 - Pannier Tank, GWR-design - The GWSR web site has announced that 1501 will be attending "Back to Black" on May 24th-26th.
4566 - Small Prairie Tank, Ex GWR - West Somerset Railway website says 4566 will be there for their Autumn Steam Gala
5164 - Prairie Tank, Ex GWR – one of the Bridgnorth cleaners is organising a cleaning expedition to Barrow Hill, where this loco is stored (Facebook)
7802- Collett 'Bradley Manor', Ex GWR - Work continues to take place with the boiler building up the back plate with weld. The work here isn't the most pleasant and can often involve working in hot, noisy, dusty and confined spaces however it is crucial that all these skills are kept alive so that we can continue to enjoy this great hobby of ours.
A mid week working party and saw the fitting of modified dust covers on the axle boxes. They needed modifying as the filler necks on the bottom are now shortened and protrude into the lower part of the dust shields. Modified axle box lids are fitted, originally oil was fed from small oil pipes on top of the boxes, both a slow and frustrating process which often resulting in less oil being poured into the axles boxes. The modifications carried out involve fitting a 1" pipe directly on top which speeds up the oiling up process and ensures the correct amount of oil is feed in the axle boxes (EMF Facebook)

1501 has been to the GWSR this past weekend and is expected to be back sometime this week into next and 73129 is now listed as being expected to arrive this week. Meanwhile, 43106 failed on monday (26th) with brake issues (reported as worn brake shoes) and had to be substituted for 50026 (which I know is a diesel but I have to say looks good in NSE).

I was there Sunday and Monday, walking the river and riding the trains (some great views of the trains between Arley and Highley). 50026 ran light from Kidder and took over for 43106s last run from Bridgnorth. 4566 is being used for the rest of the week to fill the gap. They need 4 steam locos on for Friday as they have a footplate experience, and with 1501 away, 34067 on washout and 43106 out with the break issues, they only have 3 (barring the autotank which will struggle with the load 6ish required I would think...).

So that's why 34067 didn't go to Minehead last Saturday...

Had 34053 Easter week on Russian, Welsh and Russian mixed. Steamed like a witch on all. Very little clinker. Only problem was clag, when you thought you had put a round of Welsh on and discovered it was Russian!

SVR website states provisional test run penciled in for Thursday. If it could be working over the weekend that would be nice especially as it's the first public run for the deltic as well on saturday, but we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for the info Patrick. I've been looking forward to seeing this particular locomotive for some time so I'll be dashing over to The Valley this afternoon for a blimp.

In some ways, 73129 could be considered as a 3/4 "Duke of Gloucester". Although 73129 has not benefited from the extended development of The Duke, it makes you wonder how the Standard Five Caprottis would have performed during their very short life if given say, a Kylchap exhaust. The two Black Fives - 44686 and 44687 - were the forerunners of the Standard Caprottis and they were considered a Class 6 when first introduced. A great pity it all happened a few years too late.

Still, looking forward to seeing 73129 working today and over the summer.

    Cheers

    Alan

44767 was the Stephenson valve gear black 5 so I'm not sure why it might have been regarded as a forerunner of the standard Caprottis!
