Be nice to get 75069 back. With that the 2 Bulleids and 1 from 48773/43106/600 back we could have a nice little Southern weekend, maybe with 82045 on pilot duties....

Evening folks, I'm making a rather impromptu visit to the SVR tomorrow, could anyone advise which way round 2857, 43106 and 4566 face please?

    Thanks in advance!

    Couple of questions.

How many steam locos does the present SVR daily service need - and how does that vary across the year?

And how often do locos fail and need changing from that shown on the planned roster?

(Does that count as 3 questions - sorry!)

    Many thanks

    Steven

Table A needs 2 steam locos and tables B and C need 3, plus 1 for the a diner on Sundays. It's not unusual for a Footplate Experience or charter to be running as well. Up to 5 then some weekends. In the off peak (this week midweek for example) 2-3 is a more usual requirement.

Locomotive availability is very much improved, recently 2857, 1501 and 34053 have needed repairs but only the latter needed replacing on a diagram.

    Many thanks Patrick.

Do SVR footplate crews stay with the same loco or are there more crews than locos as a rule?

Crews do normally stay with the loco all day. This coming weekend, there are some long turns which have been split to keep turns within the 12 hours.

Agree with the above but note that if there is a planned loco change at Bridgnorth for a Bewdley diagra the Bewdley crew will usually transfer to the new loco. This usually happens when a loco stationed at Bewdley needs maintenance eg washout.

Mind you we had an interesting situation when 34053 failed and was replaced by the pig which should have been the swap for the Bewdley loco. To facilitate the swap instead of simply crossing at Bewdley on the last journeys the northbound loco, the pig, came off and went to the yard. The southbound train was held at the home for this to happen. We ran in and the loco on my train detached, swapped crews, and attached to the northbound train. The pig then attached to us and we got away only 19 down. For those not familiar with Bewdley there are three running lines plus up and down loops which made the moves easier. The up loop has the loco servicing facility (pit) and is known as the Rock

If their loco manager knew this, he could plan to have replacement locos available at exactly the right station.

It's facing Bridgnorth in this photograph - was it facing Kidderminster when it came out of it's overhaul?
