There have been further mailouts and the Steam Dreams website was updated since that post, stating it would be a Black 5.
Tangmere - As always with anything at Carnforth, the first we will know is when she is spotted in steam at Carnforth, prior to a test run.

As far as I know Tangmere is still at Southall where it has been since the Winchfield incident.

It will not run again until RAIB have reported.

Is that conjecture or knowledge? RAIB take a notoriously long time to publish their reports.

RAIB inspected 34007 Wadebridge as part of their investigation, presumably to understand the differences in small-end design between the two locos.

I can't imagine that the crews are desperately keen to run far or fast until they have a good idea about why it happened and how to ensure it won't happen again.

Last Sat's TOPS list confirms that Tangmere is at Southall, status B, which means not to be moved, awaiting documentation.

Seems to be around 10-12 months in many cases.

i wonder if this has any thing to do with Bodmin being removed from MHR early? lets assume that Tangmere doesnt run again for some 12-18 months the owners must be loosing money and need to get 34016 up and running asap. so that they can start earning hire fees again, i would assume that JB has enough money to pay up front either that or west coast have not purchased the whole engine but a share in it?

You think that 34016 could be overhauled to main line standards in less time??!! ...

not in less time but in 18 months if the engine doesnt need too much work, it depends on how much work at a minumum would be needed, for instance what if the report sees Tangmere sidelined for longer than 18 months, and in need of modification to the little ends etc? but i'm only guessing, i dont know JB's plans, or even if its still his to make plans for.

I would have thought that using their resources to get Tangmere back in action as quickly as possible would be a little more practical in the circumstances.

Long on speculation, short on facts here lads. We can say "if" "maybe" etc. 'til the cows come home, has anybody any positive, factual info?

Martin Butler said "but i'm only guessing, i dont know JB's plans, or even if its still his to make plans for. "

Correct - you're guessing. I am sure the owner's plans will become clear in the same way that everything from "up north" on the Lancs coast becomes clear. It would be a surprise if 34016 wasn't seen on the mainline again, but I don't think that is practical to expect that it will appear ahead of Tangmere.

Sadly, but inevitably, I suspect that Tangmere may not be going anywhere for quite a while. Can't see the RAIB turning around anything all that quickly and I guess that NR may also have a view about the circumstances under which she would be allowed to venture out on the ML again. You will recall their interventions over the Sir Lamiel incident on the ECML.

I do feel a little bit of sympathy for WCR. They are by far the biggest operator of steam in the UK in terms of their own trains, servicing other charters and also in the number of crews that they provide. The consequence of this is that they will be 'in the frame' more often than others when something goes wrong. Although this may be a small percentage of their total work, it seems that the rail industry ignores that and just counts the incidents. So when you add up the major ones; for example, the two above, the SPAD in Worcestershire, and the fire raising last summer, it comes to quite a list.

I hope that 2014 is a more incident free year for the benefit of all and that we do see Tangmere again at some point.

34067 is currently 'stopped', at Southall, pending repairs and maintenance. There is no requirement by RAIB (or anyone else, for that matter) for the loco to be withheld from operation.

What does pending mean in this context James i.e. what will trigger the start of the repairs and maintenance.

Thanks for that clear statement of fact. However, it does kill the amusement that Nat Pres provides in reading all the uninformed posts!
